Sony files lawsuit against Tencent for alleged Horizon “clone” Light of Motiram

Sony lawsuit

Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent Games for their Light of Motiram game, which they allegedly call a “clone” of their Horizon series.

The new lawsuit (via Reuters) reports Sony’s lawsuit alleges Tencent’s new survival-adventure game with “mechanimal” beasts is a “slavish clone” that copies several distinctive parts of their Horizon franchise. Sony also alleges this will potentially confuse buyers.

Sony noted in their complaint that they allegedly declined an offer from Tencent in 2024 to produce a new Horizon game.

Sony noted after that deal fell through, Tencent went ahead and announced Light of Motiram, which Sony says is identical in gameplay, story, artistic designs, and more to their Horizon games.

While Sony’s Horizon franchise are single-player action-adventure games, Tencent’s proposed new game would be an open-world multiplayer survival game. Both are set in post-apocalyptic worlds where humans hunt mechanized animals.

Sony’s lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for Northern California, asked for an unspecified amount of monetary damages from Tencent, as well as an order blocking them from violating their intellectual property rights for the Horizon franchise.
