Sony Boss: Hello Games Making No Man’s Sky “Closer to What Their Vision Was”

no man's sky 01-27-15-1

No Man’s Sky has been surrounded by controversy since its launch, mostly due to the massive amount of hype and promised features the game never fully lived up to, at least not yet. Now, SIE Worldwide Studios president Shawn Layden has defended the game and spoke of its potential.

Speaking on Live with YouTube Gaming, the Sony boss said that he thinks Sean Murray and his team at Hello Games “had an incredible vision of what they were going to create.”

He also made a note in that the game was something never fully achieved before, saying the team had “very huge ambition” despite being a very small number of actual staff. Layden also noted that Hello Games is “still working at” building the game to be “closer to what their vision was.”

“What we learned from [No Man’s Sky] is that we don’t want to stifle ambition, we don’t want to stifle creativity,” Layden said. “We don’t want to put people into slots where they must execute against an action-adventure path or a fighting path or a shooting path.

“And perhaps over time, it’ll reveal itself to be all that it can be.”

Hello Games and No Man’s Sky director Sean Murray finally broke their public silence last month, albeit via a disgruntled employee.

You’d think the boss of Sony of all people would know better what is possible with a small team before promising the Universe.

If the “incredible vision” he’s talking about was the bullshot then yes they had an incredible vision. Shame they couldn’t back that up with incredible talent.

Well, Sean Murray is now a total slave to his original ambition. Whether he legitimately wants to make the game better or is being pressured into saying those things by Sony executives or anything in-between, he will now have to work on a game he probably doesn’t want anything to do with anymore, for the rest of his human existence, just to implement the rest of the features he promised, to even have a shot of salvaging what little credibility he has left in order to make a game people will want to purchase after this.

R.I.P Sean Murray, your dreams were shit.

The sad thing is, this is the sort of thing people can easily come back from. The big rigs people actually went on to make “infestation survivor stories” which you might know better as “the war z”. All you have to do is just rename the company a couple years down the line and people will have already forgotten.

    All I’m hearing are excuses.

Maybe next time don’t sell your game at an MSRP that reflects what “it could be”. Price it for what it is. Wow do you hear that? It’s the sound of most of the controversy surrounding the game vanishing.

The battle cry shifting from “WTF where are all the features they hyped?” to “Well what did you expect from a budget indie game?”. Tho there would still be sticking points over features that would be well deserved.

They probably could do what Square-enix did with FFXIV. Relaunch the game(once they actually make it the game they wanted since the beginning) but of course, those who already bought it will not need to buy it again.

    November 6, 2016 at 6:17 pm

Well It did take SE three years to re-do the damage that FFXIV caused, and most of ARR’s success is owed to the playerbase that stuck by it for having promise. I doubt NMS has that same loyalty, considering the amount of refunds it’s getting.

  26. Bashtarle
    November 6, 2016 at 6:34 pm

Didn’t say people would have bitched, simply that the bulk of expectations would have been tempered significantly. Instead of being reinforced when the devs came out proclaiming their game worthy of a full AAA price tag.

Which it might eventually be worth, tho by that time I’d wager that depreciation and sales will have it going for significantly less.

Course they always just could have been straightforward with their marketing instead of dancing around questions with vague implications. But that might have cost them pre-orders……

This is the wrong attitude for any gamer to have. Fist, positive feedback and criticism is the only way to improve, correct or make anything better. A small team had the courage and dedication to build something amazing! For the size of the team at Hello Games and the size of the game they have accomplished thus far, I for for one am very impressed! I am sure their vision for the game will be even more amazing when it is fully realized! A negative attitude only leads to failure! In the gaming industry so many great games with the potential to be even more were lost, never reaching their fullest potential because of a lack of vision, a bad attitude or no immagination. No Man’s Sky is a game that a universe of potential, but needs, positive support so that the developer’s vision can be fully realized. S o many games lost that could’ve been incredable! If we support this small team in their goal to make this game all that it can be, that would be a victory for all those who really love games everywhere! Can you immagin just how amazing No Man’s Sky would be on a PS5! A PSVR 2.0! The only way we will know is with positive feedback and constructive criticism and a great deal of support.

That quote reads as though there was some pressure put on HG to make something more to Sony’s liking than what HG had intended.

When your game retails for sixty loving dollars, your vision as a creator damn better be realized fully at that point. NMS’s vision wasn’t, and now there’s the possibility they could sell DLC on top of that to complete the experience. The game launched on PC’s, the platform with the biggest amount of horsepower avaliable out of any of them by *far*, and it wasn’t any better of a game despite that. Developers haven’t yet figured out the formula for proper FPS’s on VR that aren’t just rail shooters, and I sincerely doubt Hello Games of all studios is going to pull it off right.

Your attitude is commendable and I dare say even the correct one to have, but the road to dissapointment is often paved with blind faith towards a developer. The sad fact is that the game promised you a living, breathing universe, but launched without the content to back it up, and now it’s just too late, the train has left the station, nobody is interested in the product anymore.

  33. 2501
    November 6, 2016 at 8:31 pm

It’s one thing to support a disappointing game to realise it’s full potential (e.g FFXIV ARR) it’s another entirely when you where promised on gameplay features that don’t exist in game.

Hello Games’s lack of communication isn’t exactly making a good impression either, they are not gaining anyone’s trust and that’s why the playerbase is more dried out than Battleborn’s.

it has $60 DLC that adds “landing” onto a planet that is restricted to only rocky planets with no atmophere (so no lifeforms, no water, no anything, just rocks and crashsites)
you cant go on foot even after you land, you’ll be driving a car

Listen, people working in good faith don’t drop the blinds, lock the doors, and go silent for months on end after criticism. If they were trying to really improve the game (or gave a damn about their userbase) they’d be active in social media, use the newfound fortune to hire a larger, more qualified staff, and be more open.

Until Hello Games returns from their self-banishment I have absolutely 0 faith that they’re doing anything at all of their customers. They’re hiding for a reason.

  67. Phasmatis75

    “Never Fully achieved before.”
Except it was on a very older game that was nearly the exact same thing. As many times as I’ve heard it’s named dropped you’d think I would remember it, but not.

That aside most of the promised features are standard space sim features. This game couldn’t even manage the basics of the genre.

  68. Phasmatis75
    November 7, 2016 at 10:28 am

What they presented is standard for the Space Sim genre. The problem is the devs couldn’t deliver on what they promised and it became apparent probably pretty early on. The flood that wiped their progress didn’t help any. Really though this isn’t Sony’s Fault. If anything they should be greatful Sony hasn’t just left them out to dry.

Delusional? Are you serious? Nothing positive comes from negative except in a twisted, confused and broken way of reasoning,. Ever!!! Time and time again I read so much negative that it sometimes makes me wounder how anything ever gets accomplished!!! I have been a soldier, I have stood upon the thin red line of man’s inhumanity to man seeing the best of us and the worst! I have been an explorer. I have travelled the world many times over. I have broken bread with poeple from places most will never even immagin. I am a writer, an artist, a painter, a sculpter, a photographer, a Graphic Designer, and I have worked on games, my experience speaks for itself. In all of this, I have never seen anything positive come from negative,. Ever!!! In life, all life, if you want a positive outcome to even the worts of anything, you must turn what is wrong, broken or missguided to what is right, fixed or enlightened!!! A negative attitude or perspective on anything will never lead to a positive outcome,. Ever! What was done wrong with No Man’s Sky must be let go, so that moves forward can make this game all that it can be! Anything negative now will only serve to harm such endevor and doing so will only hurt the gamer’s who have the game and want it to grow! Delusional is a safety net for those whom lack vision, immagination, the dedication and courage to make something great! You in your lack there of see a disapointing game! I on the other hand see an explorer’s universe of possibility! Your perspective on this game were it adopted into the mainstream of thought would only serve to trap many into seeing the game in the same negative light, and an amazing, unique game with so much potential might be lost. Focus on what is right about the game, put away all the negative, then lend support, positive constructive criticism, then maybe this small team of developers who have this grand vision for this game might find the encouragement to make their vision a reality for all of us who truly love games!

You wanted me to name 1 thing that is better than in NMS. All of those things are better or even EXIST in Elite, unlike in NMS. Besides I wasn’t talking only about Elite. Since NMS is a walking simulator basically there are tons of better walking simulators already in existence, just browse Steam for an hour and you’ll come across at least a dozen.

    fucking lel

literally “no criticism allowed ever” because that would hurt some special snowflake’s feelings

    “positive constructive criticism” lol
This is what I said earlier about how you dont care about actual critiques and just want your ego to be stroken. That’s the problem of people like you taking criticism as a personal attack and thus never improving their skills.

I was talking about Dark Energy Digital, the developers of Hydrophobia. They went out of business trying to salvage their game after the original release was blasted by critics and gamers. Hydrophobia Prophecy and Hydrophobia Pure were better versions in comparison, but as the old saying goes: you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

On a personal level, maybe, but this is a company. If this were a company that saw a future for themselves (or the game) they would be letting the fanbase and customers know that they understand the problems, and here’s the actions they are going to take to fix it, and they’re all working hard to earn back trust and be better in the future.

Instead, they’ve been completely and utterly silent since a week or so after launch. No social media, no interviews, no indication that they have anything productive at all to say. No damage control the put it behind and move forward. Complete silence.

These aren’t the actions of a company that intents to develop or grow in the future. It’s the actions of a ‘We had a good run, split the assets. ignore it and it’ll go away so we can fade into obscurity’ mindset.

Instead, Sony is doing damage control by, essentially, lying about Hello Games. Believe me, Sony doesn’t want to be out there defending this. They’d much rather Hello Games be out there taking one for the team. The only reason Sony would be talking it is if Hello Games refused to, and the only reason they would refuse to is if they had no good news to give. The games done. Maybe 1 or 2 guys stayed on the Sony payroll in the blind hope of making a better game, for all intents and purposes… Hello Games and NMS is done.

Are you being fucking serious, nigger? Look at how stupid you are. You are just a disgusting mutt in training. I can’t believe your country is being protected by some airhead like you. If you were in an actual war they would have been wiped out in less than a day because of dumbasses like you. I bet you can’t even aim properly with all that autism flowing through your body.

Your keliedescopic grammatical broken language structure tells me you are truely an intellectual powerhouse. All that meaningless aggression to my positive posts is clearly the response of someone with too much missplaced anger for their own good. I was making an honest and truthful attempt at enlightment, encouragement and a more positive example but since you want to take somthing good and turn it toward a more negative context, why don’t we try this.. You have a nice day!

PS my service record speaks for itself! My people will back that up.

You haven’t looked hard enough then. Yin and Yang go hand in hand to form our reality. Criticism weeds out poorly made products. I work my ass off to ensure that the product I put out when I feel like actually putting to pen one of the thousands of ideas that roam around my mind. If everyone simply told me I was great, my work was phenomenon I would not have the inclination to grow, I would sit through life believing myself to be great until something who didn’t participate in the mass illusion came along and said, yeah your work is shit, but I can help you make it better.

It is the drive to rise above and be exceptional that produces great works, not positive. Worse about negativity from writing is most of your negative comments will come from other writers, I’m lucky in some much that I haven’t fully experienced it yet, but when I finish school, I’ll probably find more time to write and then I will.

No, what was done with No Man’s Sky was blatant fraud. In any other industry there would be massive fines and possibly jail time if the same stunt was pulled. Only because the video game industry is not regulated to the extent it should be do we have companies getting way with this behavior. You let it go others will pull it. Corporations and inhuman at best, do not assume a deep devotion to creative pursuits in them, if they know there will be no repercussions as a result of their behavior they will attempt to get away with it. No Man’s Sky is the culmination of this. After years of companies releasing broken games, one release without most of the features promised (which is actually against the law).

The game is absolute garbage. I play space Sims. I Enjoy space sims. I enjoy the tedium of mining asteroids and exploring the vastness of space. I enjoy upgrading my ship to be a dreadnaught after hours and hours of hauling cargo and blowing up hostile ships. I love impacting economies and shaping the world around me. No Man’s Sky didn’t even offer most of those features that are standard in the space sim genre. So no I will not focus on what was right about the game as it is entirely sub par by any metric. Glad you liked it, glad you have fun with it, now go try one that isn’t shit and you’ll be blown away. X3 with the overhaul mod is good, I’ve heard the latest X has been overhauled out of being garbage, and there are a few indi games as well that involve setting up bases and colonies in space.

You don’t truly love games, don’t try to pull that crap with me. You’re in love with your own opinion and nothing more. You’re in love with the idea of being in love. When you’re in love with games you’ll slog through hours of grinding, you’ll try new experiences that aren’t mainstream, you’ll drop 400 dollars on a PS4 Pro even though you don’t really need it. You’ll accept a game is crap, love your time with it and move on. Sitting here telling people that Negativity is bad only demonstrates that you have done nothing but live in a bubble your entire life.

So no I will not give it the benefit of the doubt. It doesn’t deserve it. It isn’t like The Forest where the developers listen and communicate with their fans, it isn’t like Dead by Daylight which I am not a fan of but the devs continue to support and try to remedy their really poor design decisions. It isn’t like a game going through a rough patch of development where the developers express they know some mistakes were made and are working to improve the game and they discuss their plan going forward. This is a game that was outright sold on lies, where the developer didn’t care that they sold their game by fraud and have refused to talk to anyone about it. This is a game where Sony now facing Class Action Lawsuits is forcing the developers ti finish their game and will likely not sign another contract with the studio ever again afterward. You do not give a game that openly tries to screw over it’s consumer the benefit of the doubt. You revile that game so that every other crooked developer who is thinking about doing the same thing will know that they cannot get away with it. You talk about the games in the genre that do well so that their developers can be rewarded for doing right by the player and their vision. You do not tell people to continue buying a scam instead of directing them to alternative games. So when you say you love games you are a liar. You either are lying to me and everyone here or you are lying to yourself.
