The circular that Sega sent out to press did lead to a reveal featuring a new Sonic game, and it looks like quite an ambitious title. Dubbed Sonic Boom, instead of seeing buff blonde guys shooting energy blasts, you’ll see a slightly redesigned Sonic the Hedgehog and friends Tails, Amy and Knuckles.
The game is in development for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and it is poised to bring a “fresh approach that will be at once both familiar and new” for fans of the series. The two Western teams that are collaborating with Sonic Team are Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games, the latter of which is developing the 3DS version.

Both games are based off the Sonic Boom universe, a totally new lineup that Sega is launching alongside a new show, merchandise, gaming, and more. Sega of America is claiming that this new Sonic won’t take the place of the modern hedgehog, it will take “the franchise to another level.”

As mentioned before, Sonic Boom is the third title in the exclusive deal Sega inked with Nintendo, making it the final exclusive title for both platforms. The games will feature the same sense of speed the series is known for, but it will also bring on a shiny new mechanic called the “Enerbeam” that lets you explore the world differently.
Sega is also launching a CG television series, a collaboration with OuiDo! Productions, and it’s set to release this fall on Cartoon Network. The entire series will have 52 episodes, each one being 11 minutes long.
