The developers behind the Amnesia series, Frictional Games, have finally revealed their newest game, titled SOMA. The game is in development for both PC and Playstation 4.
“For the last three years, we have been working on a game called SOMA,” game director Thomas Grip said on the PlayStation Blog post. “All that time, this project has remained a secret — it’s a great relief to finally be able to talk about it. This game is by far the most ambitious and thrilling project we have ever undertaken.”
SOMA is a sci-fi horror game played out from a first-person perspective. Instead of playing as a space marine or someone in a cybernetic suit, you’ll be a “very exposed” person trapped in a horrifying world. Grip says it’s a game about “exploration, survival, and immersing [the player] inside an interactive narrative.”
Development on Frictional’s games always started with a focus on the core gameplay before moving onto the setting and theme. In SOMA, they “couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought.” There is a huge focus on consciousness, asking the question “can machines be conscious?”, and the biggest question of them all, “Do we have free will?”
Grip elaborated on just how scary SOMA will be, saying it’s not “another carnival ride of cheap scares,” but it will be ea game that will “chill you to your core” and “confront you with questions about your very existence.”
