New Art of Fighting and Samurai Shodown ARPG in development

SNK

SNK Corporation has announced they’re working on not one but two new entries in two of their fan-favorite franchises: a new Art of Fighting game and a Samurai Shodown action ARPG.

The news that SNK is working on a new Art of Fighting and a Samurai Shodown action RPG comes from the studio’s Game Division Studio 1 staff Josh Weatherford at EVO 2024, during their panel at the show.

“There’s a lot of stuff in the works,” Weatherford said. “There’s a lot of stuff I can’t talk about. But we have said — we’ve got a few projects that are very far out — we want to get more and more staff, because we need more people to make these crazy awesome games.”

He added, “One that got a lot of press over here is that we have announced that we’re making a new Art of Fighting actually. So you’re going to see South Town in its full like 70s glory brawling again. And also, one of the projects I’m in charge of, that we also mentioned at the same time, is a Samurai Shodown action RPG. Look forward to that — that one, we have a lot surprises in store for that one.

The last Art of Fighting game was released back in 1996 with Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior, which got ported to various platforms. The most recent Samurai Shodown game was 2019’s Samurai Shodown reboot fighting game for modern platforms.

Only one other Samurai Shodown RPG was ever made before – the 1997 released Samurai Shodown: True Tale: Bushido Biography, which never got released outside of Japan but got a fan translation in 2023.

“If you’re a fan of these franchises and you’re looking for an in-development job, send in your application, we need more people to help us make these awesome games. I need more people on that team for sure,” Weatherford said in closing.
