Single-Player Focused MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is Revealed for PC

Piranha Games has announced MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries for PC.

This is the first single-player MechWarrior game since the 2002-released MechWarrior 4: Vengeance. Featured above, you can view the game’s reveal footage, which shows its pre-alpha form.

Set for a 2018 release, the game will be developed alongside Piranha’s continued support for their free-to-play online game, MechWarrior Online.

Here’s a rundown of the game, via its official website:

The year is 3015.

Humanity has expanded to the stars, colonizing a vast region of space known as the Inner Sphere. Where the Star League once ruled in relative stability, generations of countless wars, alliances, and betrayals have divided the Inner Sphere into five distinct Successor States. These states, also known as the Great Houses, have fought and quarreled for centuries over the remnants of the Star League and control of the Inner Sphere. They are now in the midst of a Third Succession War, one which has been raging for almost 150 years.

While the battlefields of the Inner Sphere burn with an array of devastating weaponry, none is more formidable than the BattleMech. These immense fighting machines, piloted by elite fighters known as MechWarriors, dominate the wars of the future with enough firepower to annihilate entire cities.

In MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries you will adopt the role of a rookie MechWarrior pilot thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere. Take contracts from the factions of your choosing and engage in tactical, first-person, PvE ‘Mech combat through an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice. Victory, prestige, and profit will not only require skill on the battlefield, but in the acquisition, maintenance, and enhancement of your BattleMechs.

Set for release in 2018, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is under development by a dedicated development team at Piranha Games. MechWarrior Online, Piranha’s existing F2P multiplayer-focused tactical ‘Mech combat game, will continue its ongoing live development by the MWO team at Piranha.

OK.This should be good.I hate playing with other people so the SP focus is most welcome.

Yep, I’m hyped. As rough as it looks, and despite the fact PGI is inexperienced when it comes to single player AI games, this trailer already looks amazing.

Wew lads, hype as heck for this, MWO couldn’t fill the void for me, this kind of combat wasn’t really meant for multiplayer IMO.

I hope it’s good, but being behind MWO doesn’t fill me with hope.

Wasn’t Piranha games the company that got caught outright plagiarizing assets from other games for that one space game a wile back?

Also does this make anybody else want a Vive based version of Steel Battalion running with the Vive’s motion controllers?

Can this game be good and show Armored Core fans what a good mech game is supposed to be?

Not a fan of how the mechs felt in mwo, very simple controls just felt like a slower fps. I hope this at least has a decent open ended dynamic campaign the last games all did.

What? Armored core and mechwarrior are the two best mech series that exist but they play completely different. It’s possible to love both.

I think most people i think that dismiss 5/vd were only fans of 4.

The new battletech game might be what you are looking for, and has a chance of being good, unlike this…

It’s PGI. This will be the same minimally viable product from the makers of MWO, Transverse, Bass Pro Shop The Strike, the multiplayer of Duke Nukem Forever, and a whole litany of bad games and bad game ideas. Literally the only person involved with an ounce of talent is the concept artist Alex Iglesias, everyone else is a moron.

I have zero faith in this, and can’t believe they have the gall to call this mechwarrior 5 or ape the ending to the opening cinematic from MW2:Mercenaries.

  22. BeakieHelmet
    December 4, 2016 at 6:41 pm

Yeap, Transverse was the name of that game.

I confess I saw the kickstarter way back when, but didn’t really pay it much mind. Is that one another RTS like MC?

  24. Malcolm_Ecks
    December 4, 2016 at 8:27 pm

And I think that’s a silly assumption. 4 wasn’t anything to gush over either.

dev choice? They’re the only ones with the rights to mechwarrior games right now.

The folks doing a different mechwarrior game had a legal dispute and are now trying to build a heavy gear game, but that’s been a slow burn so far as well.
