Sega and Universal Pictures have announced they’re working on a new Shinobi movie adaptation with Extraction franchise director Sam Hargrave directing.
Details on the new Shinobi movie are scant and it isn’t clear if the new film will be animated or live action, as Universal handled both with the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie and the live-action Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.
Ken Kobayashi (Sunny, Move On) is adapting the screenplay for Universal Pictures and both Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce through Marc Platt Productions. Dmitri M. Johnson will also produce through Story Kitchen, Toru Nakahara will produce through Sega, and Mike Goldberg will executive produce alongside Timothy I. Stevenson, who is co-producing.
Here’s a brief overview of the Shinobi franchise, via Sega:
The SHINOBI series first debuted in 1987 as an arcade game and primarily follows protagonist Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. Crafted with a focus on epic and edgy action, the SHINOBI franchise spans fourteen games, including spinoffs, and ports, with 5M+ copies sold worldwide. A new entry in the series was revealed in late 2023. More information about the new game will be revealed in the future.
