Shining Resonance Refrain E3 2018 Hands-on Preview

During E3 2018 I had the chance to preview the English version of Shining Resonance Refrain, the enhanced port of Shining Resonance, originally released on the PlayStation 3 only in Japan.

There was one stage available on the demo (which is also currently available for download on the Nintendo Switch E-Shop). The demo shows off several of the key elements of the battle system, major characters and show cases the musical importance found through out the game.

The musical elements of the game will play a major role, not only out of combat, but during combat as well. Players will be able to perform a musical attack during combat where the effect of the song will depend on which character is chosen to lead the performance.

Shining Resonance Refrain will feature a battle system reminiscent of the Tales of series, where the player will have normal attacks that they can chain together with magic and burst attacks in order to increase their hit combos.

Characters in the game will also have different ranges on their attacks, depending on what weapon the character normally uses. As the player continuously attacks and chains together regular, break and magic attacks, the player can break the defenses of the enemy, allowing for massive damage to inflicted upon the enemy.

From what we were able to see, the game plays smoothly while in handheld mode on the Switch with no major graphical loss or slow down.

Shining Resonance Refrain is currently available on the PlayStation 4 in Japan and will be available in the west on July 10th on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Windows PC (via Steam).
