Shigeru Ishiba set to become Japan’s next prime minister

Shigeru Ishiba

Shigeru Ishiba, the former Defense Minister is set to become Japan’s next Prime Minister after an endorsement from the Liberal Democratic Party.

Ishiba, much like the current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Shinzo Abe before him is a part of Japan’s Nippon Kaigi organization, a far-right nationalist group which proudly considers itself a Monarchist organization.

Ishiba however, is also known for his progressive stance on same-sex relationships and once said:

“There are a considerable number of LGBT people in the world. If they are disadvantaged by the lack of recognition of same-sex marriage, we should consider ways to help them.”

Ishiba is also a proud “gun otaku” and enjoys building models in his free time. While it’s not quite the same, fellow “Otaku” and mangaka (Love Hina, Negima) Ken Akamatsu who won a government seat back in 2022 has taken the initiative to defend Japan’s freedom of expression.

While we aren’t sure of Ishiba’s position, both Ishiba and Akamatsu are part of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, so things look hopeful.
