Mortal Kombat: Battle of the Realms has included a rather strange cameo; Shaggy from Scooby Doo. And he’s about to kick the crap out of Scorpion.
The introduction to 2020’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge featured a brief cameo from Daffy Duck in the movie’s into. When the WB Animation logo appears, he hops around wildly for a brief time before being grabbed and dragged back behind it.
Not to be outdone, Mortal Kombat: Battle of the Realms (which released today), made its own gag. As Scorpion shows off his impressive moves, he is dragged behind the logo by Shaggy. You can find that clip via a third party upload below.
For those unfamiliar, 2014 webcomic Scoob and Shag began as a simple fan comic of Scooby Doo with crude and surreal humor. By 2021 it became a surreal shonen manga-esque battle against other cartoon characters.
In addition to (or because of it), other memes suggesting the cowardly hippie was an almighty God-defying warrior began to spring up; including fake interview subtitles of the actors from the first live action Scooby Doo movie saying that recording the film caused bizarre experiences.
This culminated with Ultra Instinct Shaggy; born of an edited clip from Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur. After being hypnotized into being very brave, Shaggy ends up in a bar fight with a biker gang, beating what could be over ten men unscathed. The edited clip adds the Ultimate Battle song from Dragon Ball Super; where Goku had achieved his Ultra Instinct form.
Whether before or after this video, we have also seen memes of Shaggy boasting about using mere fractions of his power to defeat powerful characters such as Superman or Goku. Similar memes with other characters had been done before, so when exactly the ball got rolling with Shaggy can be vague.
Above we see Shaggy covered in green flames, indicating it could be Shang Tsung using his shape-shifting powers. Nonetheless, the gag is sure to get attention. The character certainly will not be appearing in any future Mortal Kombat games, but dare we dream him appearing in Injustice 3? No. No we do not.
Mortal Kombat: Battle of the Realms sees all of Earthrealm journeying to Outworld for what promises to be the final Mortal Kombat tournament; and protect themselves from Shao Khan’s invasion. The film is available now across various streaming services.
