Seven Dragon Saga Arrives on Kickstarter

We all knew it was happening, and now we can stop throwing money at our monitors and instead send them to Kickstarter, because the campaign to fund Seven Dragon Saga has finally begun.

The project, which brings the original SSI Gold Box developers back to recreate their classic CRPGs of old, is one that has gained quite a bit of hype in all the usual grognard circles…and deservedly so. Using their own internally developed world and tabletop RPG system as the underpinnings for their game, developer TSI Games isn’t just another indie looking for a handout. These folks are diehard industry veterans looking to make the game that, up until now, the market hasn’t allowed them to make. While you could make the case that this is just a developer striking while the turn based iron is hot, their pedigree makes it hard to criticize.

The first update they’ve posted on the project page dumps quite a bit of info, as well as some new artwork. Though the most important of these new pieces of information would be the video itself, which finally shows us a glimpse of what their combat will be like.

Speaking as someone who grew up with the developer’s Gold Box games on his Commodore 64 (and a Frankenstein’ed IBM Compatible), this project has me more excited than even Wasteland 2 originally did. Seeing a group with such a pedigree retrace the same steps of game design that literally set the standard for D&D games on the PC back in the 1980s fills me with hope.

That being said, the reward tiers are up and you only need to $65 to hit the physical boxed copy mark. Somewhat amusingly, there is also a physical version of the “code wheel” reward starting at $95…something that will be sure to please those of us who still have our old ones floating around from 30 years ago.
