Kenichiro Takaki Interview: He Thinks About Putting Senran Kagura onto PC “Daily”

senran kagura estival versus 06-20-15-1

I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down at a round table interview with none other than Marvelous’ huge boob producer himself, Kenichiro Takaki! I tried to squeeze in as many questions as I could, and I tried to ask the best I could.

Without further ado, please enjoy the written version of our interview, below:

Niche Gamer: You’re adding Ayane and Ikki Tousen characters as third party DLC. Are you planning to add more characters as DLC, third party or not?

Kenichiro Takaki: So we have Ayame (Senran Kagura: New Wave G Burst), Ayane from DOA (Dead or Alive) coming out, we do have some characters from Ikki Tousen coming out […] If the question is are there more characters coming out in the future, then yes, but I can’t reveal anything at this point.

Niche Gamer: It seems like Estival Versus is easily the biggest in the series thus far, and the reception is the biggest. Did you ever foresee the series getting this big and loved, and do you think this could spur more games in the future – across more platforms?

Takaki: Yes, it’s something that I always wanted to think – it would be nice if it became that, but I never expected it to be this big, the size of the fan community and whatnot.

When we created the first one, we created it for a very specific community target, but I still had fun creating it within that small scale. I’m really surprised by how it turned out. So yes, I am very surprised.

As for other platforms, of course I’m very curious. It would be nice to do something with Project Morpheus. Maybe in one or two years PS5 might come out? So, in those cases I definitely want to see something in that as well.

senran kagura estival versus 01-30-15-13

Niche Gamer: A follow up – we have a lot of fans wanting to know if there’s a potential for Morpheus and Senran Kagura. Is that something you’re considering or looking into?

Takaki: I’m always curious about what Morpheus does. As a spec, it’s an awesome device. I won’t be able to produce Estival Versus as is with Morpheus, but it would be more going into the Senran Kagura atmosphere.

For example, there’s five girls right now [translator points to screen demoing the game].

It would be like you’re sitting in the middle of that, and you get to look at them and be part of that atmosphere. Not really as a game right now, it’s just a concept, an idea. I have no idea if it’ll come true or when it will come out.

Niche Gamer: You previously mentioned that Hibari is your favorite, mostly because of the buruma, and that it reminded you of your childhood. Are there any parts in Estival Versus that go back to your childhood and make you nostalgic?

Takaki: I can’t point a specific part, but there are a lot of parts where I was inspired by my teens and 20’s.

It could be different games or anime, but I love SNK games, so there are a lot of aspects from those throughout the game, just using those as inspiration. Even if I’m not trying to, it just comes out.

senran kagura estival versus 05-13-15-1

Niche Gamer: Do you think that you have more creative freedom at Marvelous now, because of Senran Kagura? Do you think that goes into your overall role at the company?

Takaki: Yes, it actually changed a lot. There’s a lot more freedom.

Niche Gamer: Recently XSEED has put out more and more games on PC. We have a lot of hardcore PC fans who want to see Senran Kagura on PC. What are the chances of that ever happening?

Takaki: It is something that I always think about daily, like how do we create it. I’m not sure at this point if I can bring Estival Versus over to the PC.

I would love for the fans to create their own mods, and just go crazy on their creativity. I can’t really say if it will happen on Estival Versus, but it is something that I have on my mind, and how to make it work.

Is there a reason this site keeps bitching to JP devs to make PC games? You even use it as the title to the article. The answer seems clear if you need to be begging for ports at every opportunity, PC isn’t the platform that has the games you want.

I think the reason it’s a popular question is because Japanese Devs tend to avoid PC releases, and have for years. It’s a major cultural difference between the US and Japanese dev.

I don’t play on PC but glad they do this. Releasing more Japanese games on PC will help the small developers to find a new way of income to make bigger titles, increase the popularity of Japanese games among the western PC gamers and I’d like to see mods for my favorite games. I will still play physical games so I’ll ignore the PC releases unless there is a physical release.

his response was great, it shows he knows, and he’s got a good idea of what the game’s potential could be with mods, shame he doesn’t know how to make it happen but even SK on PC without mods would be better than no SK on PC at all
bummer it sounds like it might not be that easy to port due to technical reasons

and VR senran kagura would be the best

I do hope they port some SK to PC but if the technical issues are in the way the cost might be a commitment and sadly Akiba Strip on Steam is not selling that well so they might not be willing to invest in such a port yet http://steamspy.com/app/333980

Not sure why you’re so hostile – I just asked him a legitimate question as many people want the games on PC. He seemed very enthusiastic about it, although it’s a difficult subject for JP devs,

Another journo asked about Xbox, and Takaki said he’d like to on Xbox as well but the allowance of sexual content on the platform in Japan is more strict… so there you go.

I don’t think I always harp on Japanese devs about this, & I was just trying to ask questions that people haven’t yet, so far.

Great interview but I almost didn’t click on it because the title suggested that the whole thing is about PC gaming, which is something I do not care much about.
Imo the title should be a generic “Interview with Seran Kagura developer Kenichiro Takaki” or something like that.
    Still, good job.

I know – I was torn but couldn’t fit “interview” and such in the title I wanted, and usually when I just put “interview – etc etc etc” it doesn’t get as much traction as one that highlights a big point in the interview.

I’m kind of regretting not titling it: interview though. I did send the tweet out beforehand though!

Nintendo doesn’t normally release a system until almost 2 years after it’s unveiled usually. So odds are we will see a brief peek at the NX next E3, an extended look the E3 after and then it will launch in March of the year after that, as has been the trend with Nintendo hardware as of late.

I guess it depends on how it sold on other platforms and how much they expected it to sell

they did offer it at a very low, discounted price, which has to offset the porting costs

compared to other japanese games it sold low, valkyria chronicles says 400,000, agarest above 100,000, neptunia 1 above 100,000 and 2 above 60,000

so it might not have gotten the splash of steam sales required to impress marvellous enough to make them rush to make a port for other games

though I think if they ported senran kagura to PC it would sell way better than akiba’s strip

more mainstream franchise, more service, better action

Oh, that I also do! Jokes aside, having some SK games on Steam with workshop support would be really great. Having the 3DS games running fluidly on PC and free from the shackles of 240p is a specially great thought.

Well, Shinovi Versus made it, which means Estival should be possible too. Just hope it doesn’t take *too* long, but I understand that they’ll need atleast 2-3 years to do it.
