Sega has announced their partnership with double jump.tokyo, a blockchain firm based in Japan.

This partnership is for the development of a new Sangokushi Taisen title, which will be the companies first game based on blockchain technology. There is no release date nor platform in regards to the upcoming game.

It is known that double jump.tokyo will be handling the development of the new Sangokushi Taisen title, whereas IP holder Sega is naturally just providing the licensing for the title.

The game will be built upon the company’s “Oasys” blockchain technology, which you can learn more about on their website. The quick summary on the tech is that they claim it will be “eco-friendly”, a contentious point when discussion of cryptocurrency, NFTs, and other related technologies are mentioned.

This new technology also supports NFTs, which is not a surprise as Sega has already collaborated with double jump.tokyo to sell NFT digital content.

As for the upcoming Sangokushi Taisen game, double jump.tokyo have already stated they will be using images from the franchise. However, details on how the game actually plays remain in question, along with how this will function as a blockchain based game.

Considering previous news from Sega where they said they would drop the concept of NFTs should they prove unpopular with fans, it’s likely the success and response to this game’s announcement and eventual release will be of major importance for the company, and their future with blockchain technology.
