Games being censored in 2022? More likely than you think with the latest examples from SAMURAI MAIDEN.
The entire point of SAMURAI MAIDEN‘s existence was to be a simple hack and slash game with cute girls, but it seems even that was asking too much.
Since release the game is being criticized for its poor combat, lack of graphical options on PC, poor performance, censorship, and some very weird choices in the localization – leading to it garnering mixed reviews on Steam.
Players have taken an issue with the game’s photo mode, which obscures panty shots despite them being visible in gameplay. Here is a video showcasing the censorship:
PC players already have a mod to remove the censorship in the game’s photo mode, but that isn’t the only problem.
The game’s localization also seems to have some issues, with a few instances of awkward phrasing and localization choices that completely change conversations.
The weird phrasing was noticed in the trailers, but it seems to be much worse in-game.
Twitter user Mondblut noticed these flaws in the localization, which turned a conversation about the naming of Japanese grades into a conversation about Gen Z and Boomers.
Steam’s screenshot tab is already filled to the brim with panty shots, showing that players will get what they want regardless of companies agreeing or not.
Players may also remember 2018’s SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal, which was poorly reviewed on the PS4 due to being censored, but has a very positive rating on Steam’s uncensored version.
It would seem pretty obvious that censoring a game will immediately spark controversy and lower its review scores, but companies seem to have short-term memory when it comes to these issues.
SAMURAI MAIDEN is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows (Through Steam).
