Sabec Limited have released a calculator app on Nintendo Switch, for an eye-watering $10 USD; calling into question how it got onto the eShop.
Despite being free on most computers, smartphones, websites, search engines, and being a pittance to physically buy; Calculator is being sold now on Nintendo Switch for $9.99 USD (or £7.99 GBP according to EuroGamer).
While it boasts “clear easy-to-read multi-line display” and an “appealing modern and practical design” (which The Verge notes more than resembles the iPhone’s older calculator app), many have taken issue with its exorbitant price on Twitter [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9].
The “game’s” launch has brought into question what sort of checks Nintendo perform when adding a game to their store. The launch is sure to be insulting for indie developers who have been turned down by Nintendo in the past.
Publisher Sabec Limited have produced other games on Nintendo Switch; all simplistic app style games at $9.99 USD, with a few discounted to $1.99 USD. These include Drums, Table Tennis, Checkers, Paint (yes, as akin to Microsoft Paint), Snakes & Ladders, Chess, and more that would not have been out of place at the birth of the smartphone.
“Highlights” include Night Vision, letting players see surrounding objects via the right Jot-Cons IR camera to see in the dark up to 0.5 meters away (and surprisingly works according to their trailer), Guitar for “kids and adults of all age” to learn how to play the guitar, and Survival, Hunt, and Golf for looking like they could run on a Nintendo 64.
Match seems like another Candy Crush clone, and Bomb might be getting a lawsuit from Konami. Fight and Neverlast seem a little more promising on the surface, but based on Sabec Limited’s other games we dread to imagine what it looks like in motion. Here’s the trailer for Fight. We doubt we will be seeing a trailer for Calculator any time soon.
At this time of writing, the official Sabec Limited website, according to the company’s LinkedIn profile, is offline. The profile was automatically created by LinkedIn however. Sabec Limited also brought ALIENS to PlayStation 5 on March 31st.
