Russian Modders Recreate Warcraft III in the Starcraft II Engine

Some talented and passionate Russian Warcraft III fans have taken it upon themselves to completely recreate the game in the Starcraft II engine.

Featured above, you can view the latest gameplay video for the “Armies of Azeroth” remake, which shows off a player building a human base, complete with their farms, barracks, lumber mill, blacksmith, altar of kings, arcane vault, and even an Archmage hero. A bit into the gameplay, they go off and start taking on some trolls, ogres, and more.

The goal of this remake is to save the original graphic design (with improved and recognizable models of units) as well as the original balancing among the playable races. The modders behind this remake are promising “new gameplay features,” which so far seem to only include better unit selection, alongside the aforementioned graphic upgrade.

Here are some more screens of the remake in action:

You can also see a few shots of the remake’s in-game models:

It’s not quite clear when the Armies of Azeroth remake is going to be made available and if this is dependent on owning Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (the engine this is built in), however the modders’ own website does say you “do not need to buy Starcraft II” to enjoy a more convenient system to control units.

We’ve reached out to the modders for clarification on this, but for now you can follow their progress over on ModDB.
