The previously rumored 3D Super Mario remasters are now rumored to be in one collection, and with the rumored new Paper Mario returning to its RPG roots.

We previously reported on the rumors that to celebrate the Super Mario franchise’ 35th anniversary, there would be many new games and “high-definition remasters.”

These included remasters of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The rumor also claimed there would be a “deluxe” version of Super Mario 3D World, and a new Paper Mario. “Most of Mario’s back catalogue will be remastered for Switch,” sources claimed, along with “several other Mario titles in 2020.”

Now, Video Games Chronicle (VGC, one of the places where the rumor was first reported) has issued a follow-up article with more information. Along with re-iterating the information on other websites that the remasters would include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy; VGC states these games will be a “collection.”

“One person with knowledge of Nintendo’s plans said that the re-releases were being treated as a special anniversary collection of games,” VGC states, “rather than standard digital ports.”

VGC aslo states that while “many 2D Mario games are already available on Nintendo Switch via the console’s Switch Online NES and SNES apps […] Nintendo plans to add to this library in the near future.”

In addition, Venture Beat state they support the claims of the remasters and ports from their own sources. In addition, they claim that the new Paper Mario “represents a return to that franchise’s roots. This means something closer to the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube games, which are beloved. And leaving behind the baggage of the more forgettable entries on 3DS and Wii U.”

In our initial article, we had doubts of Nintendo making so many 3D Mario games at once. This was due to 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy having major and minor differences in gameplay. However, we did relent that there was a slim chance Super Mario Odyssey‘s engine could be modified to control identically (or closely) to the originals.

We also felt that trying to market all three games at once would make Nintendo’s life more difficult. The claims of a collection would dismiss our concerns.

As there are now four websites stating their own sources related to the release, we are beginning to believe this rumor is likely to be true in its entirety. All of this information- if true- would have been revealed at E3 2020, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
