Rumor: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 In Development by Sony and Capcom

A supposed leak has revealed a sequel for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is in development.

The news comes via a post from 4Chan, alleging the anonymous poster is from Capcom America, presumably someone involved with localization, as they claim the game’s localization started one month ago. Across three posts, the user claims the following information:

The alleged game is a 3D fighting game akin to Dissidia or Power Stone- a decision made to help differentiate the title from the Super Smash Bros. series. Content will include single and multiplayer, as well as a focus on being a “games as service” title (a continuing revenue model, usually via selling DLC and micro-transactions, introduced over time).

Later in the post, this supposed business model is elaborated upon. While the retail version of the game will feature all characters, the presumably digital versions of the game will be free to play- with a weekly rotation of playable characters. Players may purchase characters with real money, as well as costumes. Characters cannot be unlocked or purchased with in-game money.

If true, gameplay is said to be “very casually attractable yet with diverse gameplay from characters and depth still viable on tourney scale.” Gameplay will also utilize a lock-on button, super moves that can be easily executed via shoulder-buttons with a face button (“L1 + triangle, L1+square”). The UI and HUD elements are also “very easy to track for casual players. No damage numbers or anything. You can see health bar of each player on top of their head (feels like Fortnite).”

Fortnite is also cited in the alleged game’s visual style, as “art is very nice looking in this game. Its mix of cell shaded with realism for characters . Environmentals are very cartoonish looking . Borderlands and Fortnite baby look.”

The supposed project was attempted and cancelled numerous times during the PlayStation 4’s lifetime (roughly 2013 to 2016), and was developed by other Sony developers and partners. The rationale behind the support now is due to the success of multiplayer games as service titles.

“Simply Sony wasn’t too hot on quality of other titles and didn’t want to spend money on licences. But after seeing hot success of live titles and their lack of multiplayer games they went huge on this. They partnered with Capcom to make this huge hit and live title to be popular to end of PS5.”

The supposed game’s launch will occur with the launch of the PlayStation 5, and later on Windows PC in 2021. There will be no PlayStation 4 version, as it would allegedly interfere with large stages and events that require the higher CPU power of the other platforms.

Sony are allegedly heavily invested in the title, and will “spend an amazing lot of money at tourneys sponsoring EVO etc.”

The supposed game’s roster was also revealed, with 24 characters at launch. The roster could change until the game’s official reveal however. The list includes:

  • Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
  • Kratos (God of War, plays like the newest game)
  • Sackboy (Little Big Planet)
  • Ratchet & Clank (Ratchet & Clank)
  • Jak & Daxter (Jak & Daxter)
  • Aloy (Horizon Zero Dawn)
  • Helghast (Killzone)
  • Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot)
  • Spyro (Spyro the Dragon)
  • Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, looking as she did in Tomb Raider Legends)
  • Jill Valentine (Resident Evil)
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil)
  • Kat (Gravity Rush)
  • Dante (Devil May Cry)
  • Parappa (Parappa The Rapper)
  • Ellie (The Last of Us)
  • Delsin Rowe (inFamous)
  • Cloud (Final Fantasy VII)
  • Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid, appearing as his “classic look”)
  • Ryu (Street Fighter)
  • Chun-Li (Street Fighter)

One of the more interesting supposed characters is Marvel’s Spider-Man. This allegedly came about from a deal with Disney, “one of the frontrunners in marketing even.” However with the very public dispute between Disney and Sony over the film rights to Spider-Man, it would be interesting if this were still true.

The poster finishes, claiming they “saw lots of talking about Ape escape, Sly Cooper, Mike Haggar, Nero, Fat princess, Tekken characters and even MGS 4 Raiden. As I said game will have lots of future characters even from different IP owners. I expect Sephiroth, Raiden, Sly, MK characters etc in future along with any new PS IP that is launching.”
