While Sony and Microsoft (and practically every major software developer on the planet) is working on their own virtual reality headset, Nintendo has been quiet on the front of developing a new virtual reality-capable peripheral. It would make perfect sense, given the company’s history with rabidly embracing peripherals to support other new technologies.
However, we’ve gotten wind of a hot new rumor that perhaps Nintendo is actually developing a new virtual reality HMD, if an anonymous source (via Unfinished Man) is anything to believe. The source claims that a new HMD is in development at the company, and it’s currently known as the “Nintendo VRtual Boy.”
The name is a clear play on the name of the original Virtual Boy (shown above), which launched back in 1995.
The reveal for the new device is supposed to happen during their upcoming E3 2015 broadcast. Further details weren’t confirmed, like what kind of hardware the HMD is running, if it’s tied to the Wii U, a new console, or a completely standalone device like the Gear VR.
We’ll keep you guys posted.
Editor’s note: I want to reiterate that this is a rumor, and the source is nowhere near as believable as the Dark Souls III leak, which you can read about here.
