Rumor: Nintendo Revives Cancelled Platinum Games Title Scalebound, Now Switch Exclusive

A new rumor is pointing to Nintendo reviving Scaleboundthe Platinum Games title previously in development for Xbox One – only to be cancelled by publisher Microsoft.

The new rumor (via Nintendo Insider) mentions reliable sources that point to the game being picked up by Nintendo, and that it’s now a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

The relevant quote from writer Alex Seedhouse is as follows, though not much can be gleamed:

“I have confidence in my sources to report that it is my understanding that Scalebound has been resurrected as a project to be released as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Given Microsoft’s previous involvement, it remains unclear to me whether development has been completely rebooted from scratch or, at the least, its ambition scaled back – seeing as it’s now destined for the nimble, but less powerful, portable home console.”

Seedhouse bolsters this claim via Game Informer’s Senior Editor Imran Khan. While he appeared on the Youtube channel Kinda Funny Games, he claimed there was a “game that’s thought to be dead that Nintendo’s reviving.”

While Scalebound would certainly fit the criteria, even Seedhouse admits “there’s the chance that he could have heard about a different project that will be resuscitated.”

Suffice to say we do not know who the source is, though we do have reasons to believe Nintendo Insider is capable of finding such sources.

Scalebound was cancelled in January 2017, and though the trademark was renewed by Microsoft in May 2018, Nintendo Insider claims it will “soon be abandoned.”

The project was of particular interest to Hideki Kamiya, expressing his love for fantasy. During his apology of the game being cancelled, he downplayed the rumors he took off time for mental health around the time of the game’s development and subsequent cancellation.
