Rumor: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Remake Planned for 3DS

A new rumor is making the rounds pointing to a supposed remake for the best (in my opinion) Legend of Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

The rumor claims a remake of Link’s Awakening is coming for the Nintendo 3DS, and that it’s being touted as more of a spiritual successor to the game, a la Link Between Worlds was to Link to the Past.

Reportedly, the studio behind the remake / spiritual successor is Japanese developer Grezzo, who are known for their remakes for both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

Furthermore, the rumor says that the new version of the game will take inspiration from the latest entry in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is honestly deeply concerning to me (read our review here to find out why).

The new rumor (via VGCultureHQ) comes via known leaker Marcus Sellars, who knew of the existence of Soul Calibur VI and the Dark Souls 1 remaster before they were announced – so there’s a possibility this could actually be happening, plus it simply makes sense to remake the game because it is the best entry in the series.

What do you think of the possibility for a new version and or remake for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening? If the game is real, should it be developed for the Switch instead? Sound off in the comments below!

I love Link’s Awakening DX but I already have that on my 3DS, can’t imagine why I’d want to buy a poor remake/”spiritual successor” to it.

If they want to remake a Zelda game, there’s Zelda 2. Why remake a high-rated game that already got an enhanced port?

Oh wait spiritual successor. I didn’t read that part.

If the rumor it’s true it might be something like A Link Between Worlds, a new story but it was almost an exact copy of A Link to the Past, at least the idea of getting the main items whenever you wanted was a fresh concept so I might give it a try if it is something similar

    Enhanded port?
As in coulors and a slapped together dungeon, are you nuts?
It was nothing enhanced about LA Dx.

Zelda 2 should be forever forgotten as an experiment and not an entry in the series.
If you remake that it needs to be a completely new game, you can’t make a sidescrolling zelda anymore, how would you sell that?!

    I love Link’s awakening.
It was one of the first games i ever completed in my life and it was on the old gameboy.

I love how you wrote this article @Brandon
I don’t see this game often even talked about and you writing its the best zelda game… is just so… weird.
It gave me chills down my spine, not gonna lie. It is a special game for me.

So now enough fanboying out here.
The sad reality in you mentioning LbtW is indeed how dreadfully easy this was as a “remake” for Lttp.
I do not want to see this happening to LA, i do want them to keep it challenging and that is where i hope the BotW influence comes in and some even mentioned the open world aspect of that, which is the one point i can not wrap my head around how they would even go about doing that, the original was extremely linear, there is no way talking around that fact.

You’re nuts for thinking adding color and an extra dungeon didn’t do anything for the game. And you’re also an idiot for thinking Zelda 2 couldn’t be improved on (i.e. like the obvious reducing the difficulty level and not always restarting at the beginning of the game).

No enhancing a game or a port even aka making a popper remake out of it is changing the elements that did not work about a game as well. Would be level design and mechanics i would say in LAs case.

You are better off playing indie games that go the sidescrolling rout than to hope zelda 2 will ever see a remake in the way it originally was. Hell and i thought i was blinded by nostalgia, look at you. :O

7/10 is pretty spot on for BotW, to be honest. Also, how is it genre defining? It has all the troubles that an open world game has…

Still, probably one of my favorite 3D Zelda games, but I fully agree with 7/10.

Also comparing it to Witcher 3 is silly. Witcher 3 actually has a story. ;D

It certainly adds up with Nintendo’s typical release pattern of a big title followed by a smaller remaster/remake/spinoff that the’ve done in past years (like Skyward Sword was followed by Link Between Worlds the year after)

I’m definitely excited for it. LA isn’t my favorite of the handheld games, but I do have a special place for it in my heart.

    Arte you high?

It was a glofified ubisoft game done right devoid of any zelda elements that made it even deserve the name in the first place.

TW 3 was the perfection of an action rpg open world game.

You have to be trolling at this point.

Where is the branching story, replay value, diffrent enemies, story anything like that in botw? There is only what 5 enemy types and a few boss types, they are copy pasted over the whole map, this is the same design that far cry is doing since 2004, buddy. The very first fac cry had outposts that you needed to clear, great nintendo dorped a weapon in there that will break after the next fight, wew, what am i glad nintendo came to the rescue.
So now that we are at it let us make this complete, here because believe it or not i do like this game, but the elements that are in there are so few and far between that you calling it “genre defining” leads me to believe you only ever played zelda and maybe skyrim in your damn life.

What is done well are the climbing and physics based puzzles, Its great to have a game, enemy and literally everything react to stuff they’re doing but it doesn’t make up for a lack of SUBSTANTIAL content, that isn’t in this game.
The towers were also pretty cool and the way they were done with the ganon splosh over them, or in am water pond surrounded by enemies was also cool, credit were its due. Also the cooking mechanic reminded me about the alchemy system form dq 8 wich is also a cool thing, wasn’t done this way in a while.

There are what 130 shrines? And the amount of “minor combat” trials i did is 10 already, that is a small example, but one i have experience and thus bring forth. So now let us talk about the things i saw and i do not give a fuck about spoiling, you started this you will have to deal with it.

The bossfights are a joke, a complete and utter joke the biggest of them all is the very last phase in ganaon, whooo spoiler you fight fucking ganon here, again. This phase is a literal cutscene, i only saw folks get hurt there if they run straight into him, there is nothing that would challenge you and make you use all of the neat stuff you learned throughout the game. Same goes for the puzzle sections for maybe 95% percent of the game. Its the same as with the camps its quantity first and quality second.

And finally what they “borrowed” form other games or is straight up bad in botw.
The cooking system or by extension the food you got could be abused to freaking hell and back, and while we’re at it, the elixirs and food as a concept are stroight up portions form the witcher and these existed since the very first game, 2007. Hell if i go further and say they were in the books even the 90s, but lets compare game to game stuff here. Even the witcher didn’t allow unlimited food or potions and it surely had no mechanic storing infinite amounts of them and pause the game at any time, what a stupid decision that was, boy and i’m only starting.
Look we all should’ve gathered by now that zelda influenced dark souls, but botw sure as hell ripped many mechanics directly form dark souls. And the one addition to the combat good ol N* made was the worst “durability” system i ever saw in a game, ripping that form dark souls as well would’ve been the better way doing it., as in upgrading weapons over time to make them stronger and more durable. And thinking about it more i even guess i get why this was done tat way. Because the combat system is to repetitive over the whole game with humanoid fighting enemies over and over. But it was a failure trying to “fix it” in that way.
And finally the stamina system only works halfway. To not allow someone to regain stamina by stopping to swim, or on a mountain is the dumbest thing i could think off and it is such a bad way of going about this, it baffles my mind that nobody stpped to say, wait a sec drowning without stamina, what are you even doing guys?

So, there you have it a very detailed explanation for a simple number out of ten as in a SEVEN.

Except it’s even called Link’s Awakening DX (short for deluxe which means ‘of special elegance/fineness/quality).

As for Zelda 2, did I not say mention some of its problems? I’m not sure what else you’re ranting there but Castlevania Adventure, Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem Gaiden, and Final Fantasy II are also inferior games in their franchises yet did pretty fine as remakes so I don’t see the problem here.

Ok, that is funny i only had a really hard time with 7, 8 and the egg itself. Remember vividly taking a pen and note the pattern i had to walk to get to the ending, i didn’t get the book form the library the first few times, i know about it now, but didn’t as a kid. :-P. And how amazing the music were at the last boss. But as i said it might be 10 years since i played it last time to completion?

You played it recently? Did you need to look up anything? I want to see them keep stuff like the examples i made, tbh. But i would think they will get streamlined for sure. The sign forest was a god damn pain in the ass, if you got it wrong, i remember this like it was yesterday. :O

  58. TheOnceAndFutureKing
    TheOnceAndFutureKing
    January 18, 2018 at 6:04 pm

Enemies were never the challenge, it was the dungeons. In a typical Zelda game, each dungeon was progressively harder than the last because it expected you to solve puzzles with the limited items the game allowed you to have.

In ALBW you can rent all items from the get go which makes every dungeon feel like its the first. Go back and play the Oracle games and there is no way you can tell me there is no difference between the difficulties of each game.

  59. Hans Peter
    Hans Peter
    January 18, 2018 at 6:10 pm

Same goes for LA in my recollection of memory. Egg was the hardest “puzzle” in the game if you didn’t knew how to get the the info about how to do that.

Tbf i missed the book in the library many times before completely at a whim ran trough the wall in the library. And 8 was tricky, because of the fire rod, at least for me. Same with 7 and the mirror shield and even more the orb throwing stuff, the amount of time it took me to figure out you can destroy a whole floor, man this was such a cool idea! I agree with @TheOnceAndFutureKing.

  60. Hans Peter
    Hans Peter

The Orcale games were the hardest Zelda games after the 8bit era and developed by Capcom, not Nintendo. Not to mention it makes more sense to compare ALBW to ALttP… In which case the former because of the rental ability, meaning dungeons were designed around items from the get go… Instead of a lot of filler before the gimmick kicks in.

Have it your way, still not nintendo and their fuck ups with botw, i hope.
“More open” isn’t open world and “more open” sounds ok to me, atm.
Level design needed a rework, imo to fit the amount of content this game needs to ave to be sold at 35 to 40 bucks.

Does indeed remind me about Samus Returns, now that i think about it. They just need to leave the atmosphere form La alone and not make it only an action game, if they do that this could be amazing!

    Prediction Time:

Nintendo is making a New Zelda game based on Link’s Awakening, but it’s not going to be for the 3DS, but rather a new DS system with better hardware and higher graphical fidelity and is fully backwards compatible with previous 3DS games and all eShop software including a full Virtual Console including GBA, DS and potentionally GC games. This “New DS” will be announced along side the New Link’s Awakening as one of it’s launch titles around E3 or so and will be available before the end of 2018 as a bundle for around $200 or so.

Switch fanboys will screech and whine about how Nintendo is competing with itself, that a dedicated handheld system is obsolete thanks to the Switch, only to have to eat their own words when the New DS system sells like hot cakes thanks to a low price point and being packaged with a new Zelda game.

FWIW I love the artwork from Terada it comes off as a strange and brilliant style like western art being filtered through a Japanese artist. I was thinking of going with that artwork as well

Its a shame they dont, I think It would be cool to see Zelda 2 get the Samus Returns treatment.

Its also a good time to capitalize on it since sidescrollers have become popular again with stuff like Shovel Knight or Shantae.

I was about to name shovel knight as an indie, but wasn’t sure how similar it is to zelda 2 it playes like a 2d platformer most of the time. Zelda 2 does look like a sidescrollier, only with slow combat, does it play differently than it looks?

I do not hail any platform, nice try moving goalposts like fanboys always do.

I love to play the games like i want to and use a pc, doesn’t mean i love everything that is released on steam, hail gaben or any meme you might be trowing at me. Hell many would even cry blasphemy when i tell them that half-life 2 is not a good game nowadays anymore. Fan remake (black mesa) of HL 1 is a far better complete game than Hl 2 was.

Also you make great points of your own since the first reply, i really, really enjoy this conversation, thank you!

You’re an idiot. You just said it’s an “glorified Ubisoft game done right”. So if does an established thing different than other games, isn’t that innovating?

Holy shit you’re still at it? When I don’t like a game I really don’t give a shit about it, surely I don’t go commenting on it or discussing it even months after it came out. You do have a problem here and there’s definetely a strong emotional response from you to it.

I think you either should read further or play more games. An ubisoft game uses the same content all over the map and pastes this over and over again.
What nintendo did is fix the problems ubisoft has with their games, boring towers, a map that feels busy has content pasted over and over again.

They did not “fix” the lack of Meaningful substantial (could call it handcrafted) content ubisoft games had, nintendo did however got rid of every little map marker ubi games had since the very first Ac 2007 btw, and nintnendo still manged to made botw feel incredibly empty.

If ubisoft stuff does one thing well its the “feeling” of being “much” content in there. Its just busy work, but many seem to love that stuff. It still is low quality, i can not see anyone even disputing this at this point.
To make it short both nintendo and ubisoft used the same formula, but none of them “fix” the problems.

That is why many bring up tw3 to this day, because me and many others saw all of this as fixed TWO years ago. And even @Travis Touchdown Came at me with this exact reasoning. And i refuted it. Maybe i shouldn’t have added to my original comment more and more stuff that convoluted it further and further, but that is the internet and @The Clansman

already showed how easy it is for him to ignore this whole statement in favor of being a dick on the net, giving no points, no explanation nothing in return, but buzzwords award bs and fanboyism at its finest.

    @The Clansman

    Enjoy, just for you.

“What is done well are the climbing and physics based puzzles, Its great to have a game, enemy and literally everything react to stuff they’re doing but it doesn’t make up for a lack of SUBSTANTIAL content, that isn’t in this game. The world design, supposedly “helped out” by monolith soft is absolutely great and might be one of the most open worlds i ever saw, the problem is the lack of content in it, but i will be getting there.. The towers were also pretty cool and the way they were done with the calamity sploosh over them, or in an water pond surrounded by enemies was also cool, credit were its due. Also the cooking mechanic reminded me about the alchemy system form dq 8 which is also a cool thing, wasn’t done this way in a while. Oh and the story setup and things MENTIONED in botw were cool, but there never came anything off of it. Oh and the bloodmoon as an ingame respwan explanation was a neet touch as well.”

You sure write a lot just to say “Eh the game feels empty it needs more variety” boy. I never said the game didn’t had any flaws, it’s just really not interesting discussing shit with dickheads who call you a fanboy in every post, that doesn’t make up for your lack of actual insight. I’m not interested in making you like the game, I already discussed this shit to dead when it came out, I just stand by my first post, which was my whole point the entire time, not the actual quality of the game. Go ahead and block me so you can have a good night sleep.

Scoll above and look at your very first post and show me where you ever gave any “discussion points” you have not done that, instead you went along spouting how hailed the game was and that you liked it, oh and called me a hater form the get go. Even before i ever used the word fanboy, btw.

Afterwards nothing. You gave me no reason to ever take you seriously after that post. And i do write a lot, you don’t need to read it, but i do not need to take anything you answered on my posts at face value either.

Nintendo consoles having hardware backwards compatibility is where they got some respect points. A new iteration DS would be interesting as long as it doesn’t look stupid or is made of cardboard.

    In GB/C scheme:

    Grey Cart: old B&W carts
Black Cart: Dual mode carts, still works on GB but full color on GBC, didn’t take full advantage of the hardware though
Clear Cart: GBC Only Cart, can only be played on GBC (or later GBA) due to using the full GBC hardware (faster processor, extended color pallet, etc)

Seems you are right. I was sure i read many years ago capcom made all 3 (oracle of ages, seasons and link’s awakening) games with the same assets, but looking into it further. The asset parts are obvious, but the games itself was not made by the same people.

Damn, i was so sure i even read it many years ago in the german wiki (which is known for bullshitting) nowadays. I stand corrected. Thank you for making this clear.

You might be remembering Blue on your Super GameBoy then! It did have SGB enhancements.

Loved SoM, its a shame the remake is of mobile quality, but at least it doesn’t look as bad as their FF remakes on mobile. I’m hoping with the attention the Mana series is getting lately, we get a new console scale one. Maybe on the Switch, since that is getting REALLY popular. I’m surprised this SoM remake hasn’t been announced for Switch yet actually, it seems perfect for it (simpler graphics, local multiplayer, etc). Weird to see Square supporting Vita but not Switch considering Switch has already outside it and is much more powerful / easy to develop for

Could be, i did play pokemon blue via super gameboy very often, true. :D
I still find it funny how big pokemon became of an ip, tbh. I only played gold at a friends house and borrowed it for like a week afterwords, but that was the last time i had any interest in the pokemon games. I find turn based combat far to basic and i nowadays avoid most turn based jrpgs. Still interesting that i love xcom on the other hand and i got into that via FFT advance, its funny how these things can coroalate sometimes. :D

In terms of SoM, well the FF V and VI ports are really not what i would even consider comparing the SoM remake to, they’re famously horrible. My problem with that remake is a little bit different anyway. Do you remember the phone port of FFA or now calles Adventures of Mana? Well that is the engine they’re using but that isn’t all. There was a Mana Mobile game f2p one and most of the assets and the characters are ripped form that. And considering all of this and seeing the 40 buck price point this is one of the worst ripoffs i have seen in a long time.
