Sources claim that Guerrilla Games are working on the next Horizon Zero Dawn game, as part of a trilogy, after approval from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reports that “multiple sources” told them that Sony Interactive Entertainment have approved of plans for sequels for Horizon Zero Dawn.
Guerrilla had allegedly wanted to have a series of games- with a multi-part script already being written. However, the sequels were only approved after the success of the first game.
Horizon Zero Dawn received high praise from critics and players alike. In February 2019, the game sold 18 million copies worldwide.
Guerrilla had always desired to deliver a series of Horizon games – and a multi-part script was written – but the plan was only officially agreed after the original game’s strong debut on PlayStation 4.
Horizon Zero Dawn 2 allegedly began soon after the first game launched (2017). While intended for the PlayStation 4, it is being reworked for the PlayStation 5. VGC also claim the game “is said to be ‘gigantic’ in scope with a larger game world and more freedom to explore it than in its predecessor.”
“People with knowledge of the game” also told VGC that there will be a co-op mode, but it is not clear if this is part of the main story, or its own mode. In addition, PlayStation are said to be “equally keen” to see some form of online functionality.
Guerrilla was allegedly planning at one stage to release a standalone co-op game as a preview, with progress carrying over into the full game. Though it is unknown if this is still planned.
VGC also point out both Lead System Architect of the PlayStation 5 Mark Cerny and Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan have both stated the Dualsense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will show tension- “like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.”
Details about the third game were scant, other than VGC stating a trilogy is planned, and that the planned script was multi-part.
Combined with Guerrilla hiring for a new open world game, and a new comic taking place after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn in Summer 2020- it seems likely that it may be true. A sequel tp a popular title acting as a “killer app” for the new console also seems like a no-brainer.
Horizon Zero Dawn is available on PlayStation 4, and Summer 2020 on Windows PC (via Steam).
