Rumor: Gearbox to be sold by Embracer Group

Gearbox Software, the developer of the Borderlands franchise among others could be sold by their current owner Embracer Group.

Gearbox was wholly acquired by Embracer Group back in 2021, where at the time the Swedish holding company was buying developers left and right.

At the time, Gearbox was still riding the high of Borderlands 3 and hadn’t released another game since. The company has previously been supported by investments from Saudi Arabia, but after a $2 billion infusion of capital failed to go through, Embracer is being forced to cut costs and lower their debt.

Their latest high profile restructuring? The dissolution of Saints Row developer Volition.

Embracer Group has reportedly declined to comment on these rumors about Gearbox, though sources allegedly “familiar” with the situation have spoken up about an imminent sale.

Gearbox’s most recent titles were Tiny Tina’s Wonderland and New Tales from the Borderlands.
