Rumor: Achievement-like System Planned for Nintendo Switch

Love ’em or hate ’em – achievements, trophies, Gamerscore, your respective preferred gaming platform probably has some kind of account-level meta system to track and reward you for reaching certain milestones within games. They’re usually meaningless, but also addicting.

We’ve learned that Nintendo might finally be following in the footsteps of the vast majority of their competitors in this regard, considering it took over ten years for them to actually release the feature.

The news comes via the developers of the game Lichtspeerwhich recently saw a release on Nintendo’s latest console, the Nintendo Switch. A developer on the game responded to a fan in an AMA for their game:

“Nintendo doesn’t have an official support for Achievements and Leaderboards, like Sony or Microsoft,” the developer said. “But we know that they’re working on it. We’ll see how it goes and we’ll add the rankings along the way.”

When another fan naturally caught wind of a possible leak in the previous response, the dev responded with “Oops. Move it along. Nothing to see here.”

We probably won’t know whether or not this is happening until Nintendo reveals more about their full online service for the Nintendo Switch, which isn’t coming until next year. You can read more about the first details regarding the service here.

As with any rumors like this, we’re taking this with a grain of salt – however it would be very interesting to see Nintendo take a more modern approach to their online feature-set, instead of resorting to odd choices like a smartphone-based voice chat system for the Switch.
