Rumor: A Final Fantasy XII Remake is Happening

final fantasy xii 08-01-15-1

It seems like a Final Fantasy XII remake is happening, if a new rumor from a concert featuring music from the series is anything to go by.

The news comes via conductor and composer Arnie Roth, who announced the remake during a Distant Worlds concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

While this is an unexpected and strange time to announce a remake, it’s worth mentioning Square Enix composer Hitoshi Sakimoto was in the audience – so it would be somewhat insulting to confirm something fake with someone very close to the series in attendance.

The most interesting bit is that when Roth motioned to Sakimoto, Sakimoto confirmed the remake.

Lastly, despite Roth using the word “remake,” if this does come to fruition, it’s more than likely just an HD remaster of the game, much like the Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD remasters.

For now, take this with a grain of salt – we’ll keep you guys posted as we wait for a comment from Square Enix.

If they are remaking it to make it adhere more to Matsuno’s original script and vision, then I will be legitimately excited.

If they are just doing an HD remaster (which seems most likely to me) I’ll let out a big yawn- although not as big as the ones I let out while actually playing that game.

It’s gonna be a remaster, but it’s going to be a remaster of the JP only International Zodiac Job System version, so that kinda balances it out.

I’d like to play that. I know that I can via emulation, but I’ve never got around to it, so an HD remaster would be welcome. I expected that they’d get around to it, so hopefully this news is true.

That was actually the version I played (with the translation patch, ofc)- I couldn’t stand the default version at all.

While the International version was vastly improved over the original release, the core issues weren’t addressed- those being poor character development and interaction, a direction style that borrowed too much from star wars, an insipid main character, and a weak plot.

Most of those I blame on Matsuno being ousted from the project, as that guy doesn’t know how to write a bad plot or bad character development, and I know for a fact the original main character was supposed to be an older, grizzled knight. Vaan wasn’t even in the original draft, if I recall properly.

The game felt like somebody took a Matsuno plot, gutted out 90% of it, and then used what was left while trying to imitate Star Wars in terms of the direction. Ugh.

It’s more than likely just an HD port of the Zodiac Job edition, a full on remake will take a long to time to develop and they already have their hands full

Vaan’s abs in high definition, yes please. Gonna be a HD port. Still from what I’ve seen think it’s liked today, and has been vindicated by history somewhat. It did suffer from development hell, some bad decisions and the cast is either good, half good or terrible.
Gameplay is considered good though, right? Still has some issues with the game being cryptic with items and special monsters and the license chart being weird.

“Vaan’s abs?” That’s a strange way to spell “Fran’s ass.” I mean, you’re really close, but I think maybe your spell checker screwed you over, there.

As bgrunge noted below, the story and characters aren’t so hot, but I thought the gameplay and openess of the world was great. I had a lot of fun just going off on my own and stumbling upon Espers and getting my butt kicked lol. It’s a bit like a single player MMORPG in some ways.

I don’t know all the backstory of what went on as far as development goes, but I think we ended up with a flawed, but overall good game.

As much as I loved FFXII, I would have LOVED it to be about Basch and not Vaan. But they went that direction because they felt the Japanese audience wanted a more “pretty boy”.

But hoping this HD remake, if true, will at least have the international revisions in it.

    August 1, 2015 at 10:09 pm

Yes, the original vision of the game would have been a lot better than what was the final product. Sadly a lot of stuff was probably cut from the story, more so the story about Balthier and his family as well as Baschs’ story, which were the more interesting characters.

Hope this is true. FFXII may not have been perfect but damn the game was a fun one to play, story was at least not another sappy love story, and the soundtrack was pretty damn awesome.

Oh yeah, I had it in the “pretend to be closet gay” setting, thanks man.

I think the director ended up leaving, Vaan was shoehorned in to appeal to teenagers and some parts were cut. I did hear it’s like a single player MMORPG and lvoed Xenoblade (100% completion baby) so if it’s like that then great.

  15. blackice85
    August 1, 2015 at 10:19 pm

If you liked Xenoblade I think you’ll enjoy it, even if you end up a little turned off from the story/characters. There are a bunch of monster hunting quests too, some of which are pretty hard so there’s extra content outside the story.

I think my favorite fight was Gilgamesh, who was a pain to fight but in a good way. It felt like a real accomplishment to beat him.. Finding and fighting the Espers was fun too, all good and varied boss fights.

Will they kick out that useless shit Vaan and focus on the actual story this time?

  17. bgrunge
    August 1, 2015 at 10:37 pm

Yeah, he was ousted. Keep in mind he was the guy behind Tactics Ogre, the original FFT and Vagrant Story- the rumors I’ve read implied that the upper Squeenix management were meddling and interfering in his work on FF12, ostensibly for market reasons.

Basically they did to him what Universal did to Orson Welles on Touch of Evil- only worse, because they didn’t even let him finish before hacking his work to pieces.

They were definitely running up against the limits of what they could get out of the PS2. If the numbers are there a remake is a natural.

I am conflicted. I would buy this as a remake or even a remaster, but at the same time. I am not sure, if I should be supporting companies by buying the same game over and over,

  20. blackice85
    August 1, 2015 at 10:52 pm

Well, it would release over ten years after the original if this rumor is true. Keep in mind there are a huge number of gamers who would have missed it.

Yeah there’s nothing stopping them from getting a PS2 and a copy of the original, but most players won’t ever do that. Generally anyone who missed it the first time won’t ever be exposed to it if not for a re-release, so for many this will be a new experience.

I understand where you’re coming from though, but I think it’s been long enough. Not like it was just released last gen and they’re now doing a remaster.

This wouldn’t be all too surprising if real since Square have said that FF12 would be the next game to get a Hd Remake and that they want to.

I think Vaan’s brother would have been a better fit than Vaan. He saw what happened in the beginning and was tricked into feeling betrayed. Plus, it’s not like he’s a high ranking officer or anything. He was just regular foot-soldier who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The character motivation and distrust and anger towards Basch would at least be more understandable.

“The most interesting bit is that when Roth motioned to Sakimoto, Sakimoto confirmed the remake.” This doesn’t sit right with me. Does Roth speak Japanese? Does Sakimoto speak English? Was there a translator onstage translating into Japanese in Pittsburgh?

Like others have said, it’s probably an HD version for the Steam platform.

I’d probably preorder asap, this would have to be a my favorite FF game. If they do remake for the game it’ll be cool to see Yasumi Matsuno on the project. It also be awesome to get the international version of the game (the one with job classes) as it wasn’t released out of japan.

Though how ever it pans out it would be cool to see the game in hd.

No thank you. Every classic Final Fantasy remake looked like ass.

Just give me an upscaled port of the GBA version with proper sound and color and I’m good.

    August 2, 2015 at 2:31 am

Yeah, I think a FFXII HD is muc more likely.

Square already has a full plate, there’s just no way they’d have enough money for a full blown remake of a game of XII’s scale.

    Oh god please yes!

The best part in whole series. Serious, brutal and mature story.

Rebuilded from the scratch, with epic 3D models and good old ATB or CTB battle system. That would be EPIC.

Do we know what exactly did he plan?

But aye… giving game to Kawazu was bad idea. But than again Matsuno abandoned Square Enix on his own.

FFXII is a lot like VI, in that there is no main character. Vaan is not the main character, its just the guy you begin the real game with. If anything, one could say that Basch and Ashe are XII’s main characters.

Eh, it’s easier for them to pump out some remakes so they can focus on their 2 big projects. (FF15 & KH3) I personally really enjoyed 12 and if they do remake it, I will definitely buy.
