The upcoming Hollywood adaptation of the game Root Letter will hit select theaters and on-demand services on September 1.
The film is based on the 2016 mystery game Root Letter, the game takes place 15 years after a horrible tragedy led to the disappearance of our protagonist’s friend. A break in the case comes in the form of a letter, delivered 15 years too late but reinvigorating the case.
The gameplay of Root Letter takes the form of a visual novel or point-and-click adventure game, players navigate familiar scenery while searching for clues and interrogating people of interest.
Recently the Kadokawa Games Mystery series celebrated selling over 500,000 units. The film is an Americanized version of the story but it has seemingly been endorsed Kadokawa Games and Akatsuki Entertainment.
After Carlos, a young man struggling with poverty and a fractured home, receives a desperate note from Sarah, a pen pal he lost touch with a year earlier, he uses her letters as a guide to solve the mystery of her disappearance, as well as crimes she may have been a part of.
A list of theaters hosting the film has yet to be released, if you’re interested in the Kadokawa Games Mystery franchise you can check out our review of Root Film here (we recommend it!)
