Romero Games hasn’t shut down, assessing new publisher offers for canceled game

Romero Games

Not long after announcing they’ve had funding cut off, Romero Games posted a clarification on their status after rumors swirled they had to shut down entirely.

“We want to address recent reports regarding the status of Romero Games,” the studio said. “These reports have contained inaccuracies, and we feel it’s important to set the record straight.”

While the announcement they lost funding and had to cancel their new game arrived right after Microsoft announced massive cuts and layoffs, Romero Games said they cannot reveal their former publisher’s identity “due to confidentiality agreements.” However, they said fans “may infer it from public information.”

Not much is known officially about the latest title developed by Romero Games, however we knew it was an FPS and it was being made in Unreal Engine 5.

Regardless, after having their funding cut the developer has to “reassess the entire staffing of [their] studio”, though they are firm in noting they haven’t shut down.

“We are doing everything in our power to ensure that it does not come to that,” Romero Games said. “Any suggestion otherwise is factually incorrect. Indeed, we were in the studio today to discuss next steps with the team.”

Lastly, Romero Games said they have been contacted by several publishers interested in helping them “bring the game across the finish line,” and they are evaluating those offers at the time of writing.

Here’s the full message from Romero Games:

We want to address recent reports regarding the status of Romero Games. These reports have contained inaccuracies, and we feel it’s important to set the record straight.

  • The funding for our project was pulled, and our game was canceled.
  • Due to confidentiality agreements, we cannot disclose the publisher’s identity, though some may infer it from public information.
  • As a result, we now have to reassess the entire staffing of our studio.
  • Romero Games is not closed, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that it does not come to that. Any suggestion otherwise is factually incorrect. Indeed, we were in the studio today to discuss next steps with the team.
  • We’ve been contacted by several publishers interested in helping us bring the game across the finish line, and we’re currently evaluating those opportunities.

We appreciate the outpouring of support and will share further updates as we are able.
