Film director and producer Ridley Scott revealed he is working on a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios, thanks in part to their successful Alien: Romulus film.
While Ridley Scott hasn’t directed an Alien film since 2017’s Alien: Covenant, the new mid-sequel with Alien: Romulus from this year was a success and reinvigorated the franchise, both for newcomer fans and returning veterans.
News of yet another Alien film coming from its creator Scott comes from a lengthy interview with Hollywood Reporter, where the octogenarian director casually revealed the new film. No other details on the film were shared, unfortunately.
In another previous interview on the Alien series by THR, it was teased that this new film may be a direct sequel to Alien: Romulus, though the original was directed by Fede Álvarez. At that time, 20th Century Studios was in negotiations with Álvarez to direct once again.
“We’re working on a sequel idea now,” 20th Century Fox exec Steve Asbell said in the previous interview. “We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on.”
He added, “The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’ We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”
The Alien franchise started back in 1979 with the eponymous film conceived and directed by Scott. It got three sequels – 1986’s Aliens by James Cameron, 1992’s Alien 3 by David Fincher, and 1997’s Alien Resurrection by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Alien: Romulus is a mid-sequel set between the original two films.
A new television series titled Alien: Earth is set to release sometime in 2025 via FX on Hulu in the United States and via Disney+ internationally, a joint-production between 20th Television and Scott Free Productions.
Alien: Romulus premiered in theaters back in August 2024 and is now available on disc and streaming. Check out our review here!
