When famed music and rhythm game creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi announced that he was stepping away from developing video games nearly two years ago decided to teach at the Graduate School of Media Design at Keio University, I was at a loss for words. His games, spanning multiple console generations, have been mesmerizing, if not completely awe-inspiring.
Now, we’ve learned that he’s actually returned to form and is developing games again, via an interview with Edge. His previous outings spanned titles like Rez, Lumines, and Child of Eden, all of which featured fantastical worlds in which you typically interacted with abstract enemies and or regions, all the while hearing absolutely killer music throbbing out of your speakers or headphones.
Not only is he developing games again, but he’s apparently considering his next original title. Since his return to working on games, he has been mostly working on various projects, but only in an assisting capacity. This new project, however, is something that he’ll be able to completely oversee and shape the development of, and he’s apparently going to reveal more details next year.
Mizuguchi spoke at the annual BitSummit keynote this year, where he elaborated on the concept of synaesthesia, a neurological phenomenon that lets people visually see sound:
“This is a big thing for me. I started that kind of concept in games with Rez, and this is a long journey, across Rez and Lumines and Child Of Eden, and maybe Space Channel 5 too. That part of my DNA will never die, so this is kind of a life’s work for me.”
Instead of assembling a traditional studio of developers, Mizuguchi is looking to build a small group of talented freelancers who will work on his new game. Instead of forming a new company like his previous outing with Q Entertainment, he wants to simply work with others as you would in creating music, or a film:
“I’ll connect with people and put together a group who are essential to the project, and then for the next project I’ll start again. Everyone will be freelance. It will be similar to how you make a film or how you make music, with a group of independent people with specific know how working together.”
I dunno about you, but I’m extremely excited to see Mizuguchi-san working on a brand new game. I also hope it’s in the same vein as his previous titles. We’ll keep you guys posted.
