Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 – Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC Review

Earlier this year, we dove headfirst into Warhorse Studios’ latest game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Despite offering a difficult but realistic experience, the game proved that gamers still want to enjoy something challenging as long as they have multiple ways to play it (Ex: Skyrim & Fallout on Survival Mode). After playing through Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, we knew that it would be a top contender for Game of the Year in 2025. Now, with the year wrapping up, Warhorse Studios is set to release its third story DLC of the Year, Mysteria Ecclesiae. Does the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC add to the game’s experience, or does it feel like content that was cut from the original game? Find out in our review.

Two weeks ago, we had the chance to speak with Toby & Prokop of Warhorse Studios to get a preview of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC. During the meeting, we got a glimpse of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae’s story and environmentWhat do you do when a mysterious plague sweeps through the land, and the cause is unknown? What happens when there is another mystery at hand? How do you battle both God and Man?

The Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC’s story is divided into three sections. The first section involves Henry going to the monastery and learning the lay of the land. The second portion revolves around quarantine lockdown. In the third and final section, the story revolves around saving the sick while revealing the culprit.

When looking back at the story and gameplay aspects of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC, I am left divided. Although the story told was enjoyable, there were certain gameplay elements I could have done without. No, this isn’t nitpicking that they take your armor and weapons away, well, not fully.

In multiple instances, you are confronted by people who have weapons and armor, and you must defend yourself with your fists or, at best, with an axe; it is not until almost the end of the DLC that you get a real weapon, unless you feel like graverobbing. Even with the Graverobbing element, you will still need to be good at Lockpicking in order to get into the cemetery.

Outside of the combat elements, the second big deterrent was the heavy reliance on stealth/sneaking mechanics. Even before the quarantine was put in place, there were areas you needed to go to that were off-limits or required breaking in. Once the quarantine is enacted, making your way around the monastery can become a headache, especially if you have low stats.

During our main story playthrough, I relied mainly on direct confrontation and luring enemies into a certain area and picking them off one by one. Even in open field warfare, I would backstep in order to lure one or two away. In this DLC, it feels like you are constantly at a disadvantage until the very end. Even in the final fight, the game feels like it is holding you back by not allowing you to change equipment, heal, or use certain potions.

The final fight itself feels like it is deliberately inflated to challenge you. Despite having on armor and having a real sword, it felt like our opponent was healing throughout combat and had padded armor despite wearing nobleman’s clothes. The ending we got on our first run felt satisfying, but the alternate ending is a bit devastating. Despite the story rounding out, the DLC made it feel like there was still more to come, rather than being the end of the game. We could see more DLC coming to Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in 2026.

The new area introduced in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC is beautiful and interesting, but the fact that it is isolated from the rest of the world by a loading screen means you don’t get to explore it freely once you leave; it is not a living part of the world. The storyline is six main quests with a few smaller side quests available.

The sword that you get in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC feels underwhelming when you compare it to other swords in the game. Since the game is a single-player experience, we would have no complaints if there were special gear that you get from the DLC that was stronger than the base game equipment.

While the story is a fun and thrilling tale, the heavy reliance on stealth and the imbalance between gear made the experience more frustrating than enjoyable. Yes, it is fun to revisit Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but the DLC left us wanting more/unfulfilled. If you want more from the world and want to dive back in, this DLC is a good light meal vs a full course.

If you have the Expansion Pass, then absolutely download the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC. Even as a standalone DLC, it will provide hours of gameplay that some will love, while stealth haters will suffer.
