In an interview with Gamespot, Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe has confirmed that Retro Studios, the studio behind the Metroid Prime reboot and the new Donkey Kong Country games, has been working on a completely new game.

Retro is a wholly owned subsidiary within Nintendo, and they recently put out the critically acclaimed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii u. Tanabe has been an overseer for all of Retro’s published games, and he revealed that the developer has actually been working on the new game for several months now, as Tropical Freeze was finished back in November.

While Tanabe couldn’t confirm what the new game is, we have gotten a small tease of its true form thanks to an interview between Shigeru Miyamoto and the Official Nintendo U.K. Magazine. In the interview, Miyamoto said that Retro is a “high priority” studio, and that they could possibly pick up development of a new Metroid game.

“Certainly the Metroid franchise is one that, when you talk about really bringing the world to life, we feel that Metroid and the characters established are really important for Nintendo,” Miyamoto said. “So important that they were included, obviously, in Nintendo Land.”

Miyamoto also said that he is confident now that Retro Studios are at the point where they have enough staff and talent to handle multiple projects in development at the same time. Previously, they have been working on only one major project at at time.
