Yacht Club Games has announced they’re canceling the retail version of Shovel Knight.
The retro-inspired platformer will now only be available via a retail version across PlayStation 4, Wii U, and 3DS.
“We really gave it our best effort, but unfortunately, because of publishing policies on that platform that are totally beyond our control, we couldn’t make it happen,” Yacht Club Games explained. “We’re very sorry…we know there is a lot of interest – the pre-orders were really good and we thank everyone for their support!”
Yacht Club Games are still working on a PS Vita retail version, but they said it won’t come this holiday. Finally, the publisher also confirmed a small price hike for the retail version, from $19.99 to $24.99.
“Although everyone initially agreed to a $19.99 price point, some retailers ran into trouble with limited space to show off their wares, and the rules in place about where games with certain prices are displayed. We didn’t want our ‘bargain priced’ game to go straight to the bargain bin of obscurity, so we had to raise the price.”
If you already pre-ordered Shovel Knight at $19.99, your retailer should honor the original price. Finally, Yacht Club Games confirmed that all retail copies of the game will come with a free download of the game’s original soundtrack.
