We’ve learned the much-rumored and anticipated Vivendi takeover of Ubisoft is possibly happening, and it could go down sometime later this year.
The news comes from a report at Reuters, who cite “sources close to the matter” noting both Ubisoft and advertising group Havas as the next two targets for Vivendi – who is reportedly looking to expand into becoming a full-fledged media group.
“Vivendi is moving to the second phase, everything will take place this year,” one of the sources said, when referring to both Havas and Ubisoft.
“The logical thing would be to buy Ubisoft,” the second source noted, adding that Vivendi chairman Vincent Bollore would not buy the game developer at any price, and might consider other acquisitions in China.
Ubisoft is currently 25% owned by Vivendi, who have been investing lots of cash into the company’s stock as far back as 2015.
Despite the ongoing interest in acquiring the company, Vivendi has been turned down by the company-founding Guillemot family, who refuse a complete takeover. A forceful takeover against the Guillemot family’s wishes would not only be expensive, it would probably take a lot longer.
We’ll keep you guys posted.
