Rumor: Blizzard Pulled the Diablo IV Announcement from BlizzCon 2018

Following the reveal for a mobile Diablo game, Blizzard has had a bit of a PR nightmare on their hands. A new report suggests Blizzard was planning to reveal a proper new Diablo game, but pulled the announcement at the last minute.

The new report comes from two unnamed sources (via Kotaku) who claimed the company was going to announce Diablo IV at BlizzCon, but instead opted to only reveal the mobile game – Diablo Immortal. Our own editorial and follow-up suggested a new core game in the series announced with the mobile game would have appeased longtime fans.

The reveal was going to come in the form of a video in which Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Allen Adham would tell the audience that a proper new Diablo game, Diablo IV, is in development, but is unfortunately not ready to be shown off yet.

The report notes that Blizzard pulled the announcement last minute as the Diablo team isn’t ready to commit to a reveal yet – because the game has changed quite a bit over the past few years. Kotaku also noted that Diablo IV has been changed over at least twice under different directors.

Previously, Blizzard teased that they had multiple Diablo projects in development, one of which we now know is the mobile game (following our source on the mobile game’s existence), as well as a potential Netflix animated series.
