Relive The Early Polygonal Racing Game Era With Racing Apex

If you were old enough to be a frequent arcade visitor in the early 90s (or had parents that let the attendants baby sit you while they shopped), you probably remember Sega’s Virtua Racing. As one of the earliest 3D racing games, and the first real step-up from Hard/Race Drivin’s low-framerate gameplay, it could be argued that Sega’s polygonal racer was one of the most influential arcade games of that era.

If you agree, you might want to take a look at Lucky Mountain Games’ new racing title Racing Apex.

Borrowing its look from Virtua Racing and its “zany” character selection mechanic from games like Crazy Taxi and Twisted Metal, it’s obvious the developers are huge fans of classic multiplayer racing games. The booming voice of the title’s overly-dramatic announcer, which sounds like the one used in so many of Sega’s classic arcade games, is enough to convince you of that.

While nostalgia plays a big part in the game’s appeal, Racing Apex will include modern conventions such as online global leaderboards and various arena-based competitive modes.

Racing Apex will also have over 30 different vehicles, 16 tracks, and a wide selection of guns to destroy other players with. As of now, there is no concrete date for its release, so until then we’ll have to be content with what the developer’s website is willing to show us.
