It’s closer to like eight hours and that’s ignoring trying to do alternate routes and such.

And even then longer games aren’t automatically better. Chrono Trigger is maybe a third as long as the usual RPG and it’s probably the best one ever made.

Am I the only one who absolutely finds Undertale massively overrated and completely uninteresting?

I became aware of it due to its popularity, and people claiming it was the best thing since sliced bacon.

And when I first laid eyes on it, my reaction was “What the hell is wrong with you people”.

It looks worse than an 8 Bit JRPG, but I guess that should be an achievement in and by itself, given that RPG Maker is around. Oh sorry, that’s intentional retro art style, it has nothing to do with most indie developers not being competent enough to create and animate detailed high resolution pixels.

When I asked people what is so interesting about the gameplay, they say it has a ‘cooky’ story and that you can go through the game by befriending and not killing every enemy you meet. What?

Cooky is rather subjective (and I guess it might mean Earthbound like depending who you ask) and can’t really sell me on it, unless you spoil it to shit for me (which kinda defeats the purpose). Though the fact that you play with a freaking little girl, when I hate playing with teens in JRPG’s most of the time is enough to turn me off.

Why being a pacifist, in a JRPG clone with such a basic look and design (this isn’t Deus Ex) is such a big selling point? I wanna kill shit with my sword, axe, spells whatever damn it, not play house with my dollies.

Granted I haven’t actually played the game, but then again my entire point is why should I? It looks like shit, everybody and their aunts cunt, seem to have a hard on for it and I can’t understand why.

Maybe I’m just getting old, or all of you motherfuckers have lost it, one or the other, probably both…

It’s disappointing that Undertale gets so much hate because of its fanbase. It isn’t the first great game to have a shitty fanbase. It’s a charming little game that I personally felt had quite a bit of the spirit of EarthBound, and it actually did a few clever things with save data.

They don’t care about the game, they just like the story; that’s everyones reason for saying it’s the best game ever. Whenever I’ve asked anyone who enjoyed it about the gameplay, they say it got dull and repetitive early on.

Most who enjoyed the game haven’t played it either, they just watched lets plays, no joke.

I can’t tell you why everyone loves Undertale, but I can tell you why I do.

EarthBound is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s been that way since I’ve played it, over twenty years ago. It was different than most of the other JRPGs that I played at the time, being far less melodramatic, and it hard a charming quirkiness that grew on me the older I got. To this day, I still do an annual play-through of the game.

Undertale made me feel the same sort of emotions I feel when I play EarthBound. Since those feelings are *good*, it makes me like Undertale quite a bit. Having an above average soundtrack and doing some genuinely need things mixing game mechanics (particularly saving) and narrative helps, too.

I’ll agree the fanbase is shit, but I don’t hold that against the game. If I did, I’d hate my favorite franchise, Fallout, since whether is the folks on NMA that hate everything new, or the Bethesda fanboys that hate everything old, they all come off as dicks.

The protagonist was genuinely brilliant actually, from a design standpoint. While the tumblr crowd had a good wank over how “progressive” it was, it was actually something that was great for immersion/imagination. What was (s)he? A boy? A girl? (S)he is whatever you want it to be. And shit is something I always look for in RPGs. It took the WRPG idea of making your own character, without actually allowing you to make your own character. At the very least, the idea is sort of cool.

While I can understand some of the criticisms, Undertale wasn’t a bad game. Sure, you can tell Toby has a mad hardon for Earthbound and Homestuck, but it has great music, eccentric character design, a brilliant interpretive battle scheme, and an interesting story…at least, up until the point it goes all ARG at the end. Then it devolves into ten shades of meta-retarded. I have no tolerance for games that auto-close or generate crash dumps or tamper with system data as part of their normal operation.

  78. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 1:41 pm

Honestly, as annoying as the fanbase is, the game really does have some issues. But I suppose the first problem is that it doesn’t really live up to the hype.

  79. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 1:45 pm

How do you even come to such a conclusion?

  80. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 1:50 pm

I can acknowledge the game does well in certain parts (mostly the music and the battle system…while graphics leave something to be desired). But my biggest criticism about Undertale is its “morality”, as it wants to make the player feel bad about the very basic concept of defending oneself when they are suddenly jumped by monsters. There is no gray area when it comes to the game and the fact that it only has one ending when most games that sport a morality system have multiple says just as much.

  81. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 2:00 pm

I attempted to play it out of curiosity, and I really don’t get the hype. I mean the music and combat system are things I can honestly praise about it. But the story, graphics and the so-called “morality system” leave something to be desired. In fact, I have a huge beef with the morality system because it doesn’t really play out. What kind of morality system is it when the game was clearly made for the player to be a pacifist (with that route being the only actual ending) and when all that’s said and done, asks you to STOP PLAYING IT?

  82. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 2:02 pm

I can only speak for myself in this regard, but my issues with game came with the game itself. Yeah, the fanbase has its problems, but everyone seems to assume that’s the only reason why people would dislike this game.

See, I can get people not liking it, and that’s cool. People have legit reasons for disliking various games. It’s just that at least here, most people shit on the fanbase more than anything else and judge the game based on it.

  85. Jettythesunfish
    June 6, 2016 at 8:38 pm

I feel I have to blame that on the developer himself and how he constructed the game. One complaint I hear of regarding the fanbase is that people who do playthroughs or stream it are constantly hounded by fans to not kill anything and go for a pacifist run. But that’s the only route the game has an actual ending for. Perhaps if Undertale had more of a gray area within its faulty morality system, and, you know, had multiple endings like many other games do, there wouldn’t be people harassing players about it.

  86. Sean Sharpe
    Sean Sharpe
    June 6, 2016 at 10:43 pm

The game has multiple endings though. If you beat the game on one of the neutral endings, you still get a few brief lines about how the underworld fairs after you leave. And while the game intends for you to replay the game a second time, this time to the Pacifist ending, the entire act of replaying the game is a deliberate act and part of the overall narrative.

The fanbase often misses the point of fucking up the first time is actually supposed to be essential to understanding the way things work in the universe. Making a mistake and trying to correct is is part of the nature of some of the games concepts. (As well as the fact that sometimes, if you go too far, there’s no going back no matter how much you want to.)

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not perfect, and some of the ideas that the game is trying use are a little too much for the developer’s writing skills. And sometimes, I think the fanbase focuses too much on the “feels” ignoring some of the really interesting metaconcepts that the game had. I’d love to see other games actually focus more on “Determination”, for example. As it was either beyond the scope of his writing ability, or beyond the scope of an indie game he pretty much did by himself.

  87. Jettythesunfish
    June 7, 2016 at 12:16 am

As far as what you explained, I understand.

I only wish the game actively encouraged replayability instead of seemingly allowing it, only to berate you, the player for doing so. It’s very conflicting to design a game with multiple routes yet have a biased direction in which only one route gives you an ending (with credits). Other games do better in this regard without depriving the playing of the experience or asking that they not replay the game. Seems like Toby had an agenda in mind and put that into priority over making a well constructed game and story.

In retrospect, that’s not a bad thing, necessarily. You can send a message about society or human thought through a game and its design and make it enjoyable.

With Undertale, however, you’re thrust into an unfamiliar world of Toby’s own design where monsters are good (even if they try to kill you on sight) and humans are bad (even if they only fight in retaliation). There’s no gray morality. There’s a line drawn between “good” and “bad” and you’d better step on either side or don’t bother. Middle ground? What’s that? You’re the bad guy for knocking out the monster that tried to skewer you with a spear! How dare you? That sort of black and white spectrum of morality is something I loathe.

And I just can’t help but feel there’s this “video games make you violent” mentality going on with the game and it rubs me the wrong way.
