Ready or Not dev says players can mod things back after console port censorship

Ready or Not

Tactical shooter Ready or Not is launching for consoles this month and while content had to be cut, its developer is saying fans can simply re-add cut content back to its PC version.

Ready or Not is launching for consoles this week, on July 15th, and to meet approval for Xbox and PlayStation the game had to censor numerous things – mostly nudity.

Fans are understandably upset over this and over 20,000 negative reviews have been lobbed at the game’s Steam page. Developer VOID Interactive noted the changes had to be made “to ensure a smooth global launch across platforms,” while “fully preserving the game’s tone, themes, and intensity.”

Here’s a list of things changed or censored for the console release:

  • Twisted Nerve: The girl is now depicted as sleeping instead of convulsing.
  • A Lethal Obsession: Nudity involving the ghillie suit suspect has been adjusted
  • Hide and Seek: Female hostages now wear underwear
  • Narcos: Police informant hostage now wears underwear
  • 23 Megabytes a Second: ‘Photo of Minors’ objective model was revised, also to better connect narratively with the later ‘Sinuous Trail’ mission.
  • Post-mortem dismemberment has been disabled (note: dismemberment for living characters remains unchanged, and can be seen in the latest Vol. 87 dev briefing: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1144200/view/526472884483260567

Some fans asked the developers on their Discord server if it was possible for the game to run two development builds – one on PC and one on consoles – to avoid the content being cut. This isn’t possible, due to the logistics behind support.

“There are fundamental issues with game-sync that we don’t have the ability to fix for a variety of reasons,” VOID Interactive community manager Kaminsky said. “You introduce extra problems when you support two different builds, maintaining two builds means double cert time, double cert costs, double compiling time, double QA time, and the non-zero possiblity of drift between the two versions.”

Fans were bummed out about this but another fan asked on the possibility to simply mod the content back in, to which Kaminsky said “Yup. You can just mod everything back in.” This is a common workaround for games with adult content released on Steam with an “all ages” version.

It’s worth noting, however, fans that mod the graphic content back into Ready or Not will be unable to play with console players, via crossplay.

Ready or Not was originally released in early access back in 2021 and hit full release for PC (via Steam) in December 2023.
