Ragnarok Online is a game that had a very unique art style and gameplay, and I have some fond memories of playing it with friends. After their director Hak Kyu Kim left Gravity Corp in 2002, development of Ragnarok Online was handed off to a different team altogether.
This led to the game adapting to more western styles and influences, which obviously made a lot of fans have either mixed feelings with the sequel, or not like it at all. Since leaving Gravity Corp, Hakkyu Kim founded IMC Games, and has since been working on the spiritual successor to Ragnarok Online, titled simply Tree of Savior Online.
You can view a trailer for the game below:

If you’ve ever played Ragnarok Online, this trailer will probably get you all nostalgic, as it definitely has the same kind of vibe and gameplay that the original had.
Kim’s goal at IMC Games is to make Tree of Savior Online the “spiritual successor of Ragnarok Online,” starting first with the art style, as the characters are sprites that are implemented in a 3D environment, but it’s definitely a sight to behold.
Here are examples of the sprites you can find in game:
You can also check out some environments from these brand new screenshots:
All of these new assets are from This is Game’s report on the game, and according to them the game sports 80 different classes! Tree of Savior Online also has 200 unique bosses, and it also ditches the targeting system of the original Ragnarok Online, giving it more action RPG style combat. I’m so down.
The first testing of the game will start in February of next year, but there is no word on a Western leg yet. In the meantime you can check out their website, and we’ll keep you guys posted.
