Puzzle & Dragons and Super Mario Bros. are Teaming up for an RPG Puzzler

Nintendo revealed in November last year that it intends to expand its core franchises with more spinoffs and smaller games.

As evidence of that, GungHo Online Entertainment’s Kazuki Morishita and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto announced yesterday that Puzzle & Dragons and Super Mario Bros. will be getting a crossover game.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, as the mash-up will be called, will be a Nintendo 3DS adaptation of the Puzzle & Dragons mobile game, which has more than 40 million downloads worldwide, across iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire.

The game’s debut trailer, featured above, shows that Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will stick to Puzzle & Dragons‘ gameplay, while adding the Mario series’ familiar characters, power-ups, and overworld.

The puzzle RPG’s story starts when Bowser attains the power of a Drop and kidnaps Princess Peach. Mario, as is tradition, must save her—this time through a series of puzzle battles.

You can see more of the gameplay in the video below.

Nintendo will probably be localizing Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition for other regions, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The game will be releasing in Japan for the 3DS on April 29. It will cost 4,000 yen.
