PS3 Games Available Via Gaikai in 2014

The president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, talked about Sony’s plan to make  part of the PS3 library available on the PS4 via Gaikai, a cloud gaming service Sony purchased in summer 2012.

Until today there hasn’t been any confirmation on what exactly they planned to do with the service, although Sony has talked about its possible use as a vehicle for playing older titles without the use of hardware backwards compatibility or software emulation and on demand demo’s several times.

The service is said to go live in North America in 2014.

Other attempts at streaming games from the cloud on PC have had their fair share of problems, a hefty bandwidth requirement and a rock solid internet connection were prerequisites to even logging in. Issues with video quality and input lag are more problems that can ruin an experience quickly. Playing a game that alternates from 720p to looking like someone just urinated on your tv while everything you do in the game is delayed by half a second is no ones idea of a good time. That said, when it works the way it’s supposed to it’s pretty damn cool. Let’s hope Gaikai can deliver what we were told playing games from the cloud is supposed to be like.
