Sony launched a new website detailing the history of PlayStation – where they confirm the PS2 has now sold over 160 million consoles to date.
The new website was launched ahead of the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation, which actually comes on December 3rd, and spans the entire history of the platform through each generation of PlayStation.
The website also shared sales numbers on each PlayStation platform:
- PlayStation – 102 million consoles worldwide from 1994-2006
- PlayStation 2 – 160 million consoles sold worldwide since 2000
- PlayStation 3 – 87 million consoles across the world since 2006
- PlayStation 4 – 117 million consoles sold worldwide since 2013
It’s worth noting the new sales record for the PlayStation 2 breaking 160 million units sold was officially confirmed for the first time today – it wasn’t reported in previous financial reports from the company.
Furthermore, some fans are speculating the new sales numbers were announced in anticipation of the Nintendo Switch outselling the PlayStation 2, as it continually moves millions of consoles and is nearing the old sales record for PS2, which is still listed elsewhere as 155 million consoles.
