Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the Kyoto Animation arsonist as the trial gets under way.
Four years ago Shinji Aoba committed one of the largest mass-murders in Japanese history when we set fire to Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) studios. The attack left 36 individuals dead and 32 injured.
According to Japanese news agency NHK, Aoba offered an apology in court to the families of the victims. He went on to claim that if he had received help like he had in the Osaka detention center he may not have chosen to perform the attack.
