Project Sonic 2017 Officially Titled Sonic Forces, First Gameplay

Sega has officially titled Project Sonic 2017 as Sonic Forces.

The news was confirmed during their Sonic the Hedgehog SXSW 2017 panel, and the game was previously confirmed for a holiday launch across PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Featured above, you can view the debut gameplay for the title.

Sonic Team studio head Takashi Iizuka said the name stems from the game’s core focus: forces. In the game, the forces of good and evil are naturally fighting each other again. Sonic and friends are on one side, while Dr. Eggman and his army are on the other.

Iizuka poises Sonic Forces as “an evolution of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations,” as it’s being made by the same team. There are three differing gameplay styles including modern and classic Sonic gameplay, with the third to be revealed in the coming months. There will be platforming, exploration, branching paths, and even Red Star Rings.

Sega is building the game in a new engine titled appropriately the “Hedgehog Engine 2,” which builds upon the previous engine and turns it up to eleven – featuring physical rendering of objects, better water and item reflections, global illumination, and more.
