A recent episode of Project Sekai Colorful Stage Featuring: Hatsune Miku has been removed after receiving criticism for the alleged use of blackface.

Project Sekai Colorful Stage is a rhythm game released by Sega for mobile devices and has branched into multimedia with its series of cute and funny YouTube shorts. In episode 6, the girls of the series dress up as gyaru lions.

For those unfamiliar, gyaru fashion can include over the top light makeup meant to contrast with dark fake tans. Despite not releasing the episode in English, viewers bombarded the Japanese upload with comments and downvotes as a result of the alleged blackface present in the episode.

Project Sekai has since released an apology for the episode and has removed it “indefinitely”.
