Producer Adi Shankar acquires rights to Duke Nukem

While Netflix recently premiered its Devil May Cry animated series led by Adi Shankar, the producer has his next project lined up already with the iconic Duke Nukem, for which he recently acquired the rights.

Shankar is a producer on several Hollywood films and now video game adaptations, leading not only the recent Devil May Cry series but the long-running Castlevania animated series for Netflix, which has spawned a spinoff sequel series that got a second season this year.

When being interviewed for the new Devil May Cry animated series and his overall work, Shankar was asked what his next project could be.

“I got video games in production. Obviously more Devil May Cry,” Shankhar said in the interview. “I’m being approached with different IPs and companies that want to work with me. I bought the rights to Duke Nukem. Not the gaming rights, but I bought it from Gearbox.”

Naturally, this brings a lot of questions on how an iconic yet politically incorrect character like Duke Nukem could be portrayed in modern media, to which Shankar elaborated his vision:

“It’s a middle finger to everybody,” Shankar said. “When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it’s just a middle finger.”

He added, “Duke Nukem can’t be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it’s no longer Duke Nukem. I don’t intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.”

It remains to be seen if Adi will produce a new series based on the character, originally made by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms), or a feature film. The game series follows the titular Duke Nukem as he battles various enemies, military, aliens, and more. It’s notable for its violence, sexual themes, and humor.
