NIS America have announced Prinny 1•2: Exploded and Reloaded, for Nintendo Switch.
The game is a graphically updated port of Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, and Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! Both games are 2D platformer spin-offs of the Disgaea series, where the player gets 1,000 lives (1,000 Prinnys) to complete the game. They originally launched in the US on the PSP in 2009, and 2011 respectively.
The first game has a 10 hour in-game time limit, changing elements of stages depending on the time remaining or the time of day within the game. Players can also build up a combo meter (much like in the Disgaea series) to earn rewards- such as in-game items for points, power-ups, or healing.
While the first game sees Demon Lord Etna demand her Prinny servants bring her the ingredients for the “Ultra Dessert”, the sequel has them find her stolen panties.
A Prinny is a reincarnated soul of a sinful human in the Netherworld or Celestia, stuffed inside a penguin-like body, and forced to serve. Their servitude goes towards their eventual reincarnation, with those in the Netherworld being treated as borderline slave-labor.
It also does not help that Prinnys explode when thrown. Both Prinny games feature a red scarf to grant a Prinny the title of “Hero Prinny,” and prevent them from exploding. The games difficulty modes can allow for multiple hits, or just one hit to kill a Prinny.
The character has quickly become a mascot for Nippon Ichi Software, thanks to their upbeat-yet-lazy attitude, silly antics, and frequent use of the word “Dood.” In Japanese it is “-ssu”, a slang form of “desu” associated with punks, and thuggish individuals.
