President Trump pardons Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht

Ross Ulbricht

Newly sworn in President Trump has announced a full pardon for Ross Ulbricht, founder of the ill-fated Silk Road online marketplace.

Trump announced the “full and unconditional pardon” for Ulbricht on his Truth Social account, nearly a decade to the day since his 2015 sentencing over a myriad of charges for running the dark web marketplace.

“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross,” Trump wrote.

He added, “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!”

While the Silk Road marketplace was launched back in 2011, it didn’t take long for the nature of the website to get attention of law enforcement – and his arrest in 2013.

Despite only maintaining the website, Ulbricht was later charged on a number of non-violent convictions and sentenced to double life in prison plus 40 years, without parole.

Over the years, Ulbricht tried to appeal his sentence in 2017 for the Second Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals and later in 2018 via the Supreme Court – both of which were unsuccessful.

A key campaign trailer promise from now-elected President Trump to libertarian voters was to pardon Ulbricht, which he has now come through with after a flurry of other pardons and executive orders.
