Rain World is a very interesting kickstarter funded game that features these cat like creatures that are literally called “slug cats,” but that’s probably not what got my attention. The game’s art style, combined with the very crushing, old school type of gameplay mechanics, altogether create a very organic looking experience.

The game uses a combination of hand drawn 2D animation and code-based procedural animation, which gives the sprite based characters a very unique and living, breathing look. It’s a game about survival, pure and simple, and yet it’s also a game about saving your slug cat pup children.

I think my favorite aspect of Rain World is the post apocalyptic environments, specifically the dilapidated structures, and the destructive and dangerous environments. Everything comes together to create a really hostile looking environment, while the slug cats are totally cute and strange looking, creating a dichotomy between the two extreme styles.

Although the original platforms the game is being developed for only include PC, Mac, and Linux, the developers behind the game have made a note of the backer interest in the Playstation Vita and Wii U platforms. They even went so far as to say: “that’s likely where our initial goals will be beyond PC, Mac and Linux, but we are keeping our options open. We’d like for everybody to be able to play!”
