Pokemon Confirmed for NX, Company Exec Teases Handheld-Console Hybrid

tsunekazu-ishihara-09-25-16-1

A new report via the Wall Street Journal has confirmed Pokemon games will make an appearance on Nintendo’s upcoming NX console.

The news was confirmed via The Pokémon Company’s Tsunekazu Ishihara, who revealed the long-running RPG series would naturally be on the console.

“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device,” Ishihara teased before confirming the franchise on the NX.

This is the first real statement addressing the hardware’s long-rumored focus on switching between a handheld and a home console.

How do you guys feel about the new console having some kind of ability to go from home console to handheld? Sound off in the comments below!

Nintendo please, I just want exclusives to give a shit about (and games that aren’t censored for that matter and avoid region locking).

This makes the most sense. To produce games that work on both a handheld and console version of the hardware that are 2 separate devices.

Having essentially just one console would be a good move for Nintendo at this time. Unifying handheld dev teams and console devs teams would also mean they could output more games. This means there would (hopefully) no longer be those several month long dry spells that both the Wii U and 3DS had occasionally.

Pokemon was obviously going to be on the NX, so this doesn’t surprise me. And hey, this now means Pokemon is finally going to be a console game.

I do wonder how long they’ll continue to support the 3DS though. The Wii U is obviously a failure and they probably can’t wait to leave it behind, but as far as I know, the 3DS is still doing moderately well.

The biggest thing I can see in the future is Monster Hunter being on the NX, since Capcom seems quite happy with Nintendo. Then I can finally play Monster Hunter on real controllers that don’t cramp my hand.

Oh, also no region locking please, that would be great.

Makes sense, the Wii U was failure, the 3DS has been out for a while and Nintendo’s biggest success after the NES/SNES era was on handhelds.

If it’s region locked though then I will just say fuck it and just import one from Japan. I will just google and watch YouTube videos for the interface then use the rest of the game as training for moonspeak. God knows that’s the only exit these days.

We all know it’s gonna be the same song and dance, just more of the same. Another gimmicky console with a bunch of rehashed first-party titles, a handful of decent third-party titles butchered by censorship and localization, a shitload of shovelware, and the predictable nintendo forced family-friendly fun mandate.
As much as they enjoy innovating, Nintendo never strays far.

Best bet is that it’s a mashup of all the best parts of each Console series with someone other than Gamefreak making and that the things holding back Smash 4 are dealt with in such a way that stuff isn’t cut and scaled down for it to work on handhelds.

They will need a Pokemon game to push the system. As for the handheld aspect – it does sound interesting, but it may be underpowered, which could create issues with third party devs and Nintendo needs everyone it can get to develop for the system after the lacking support for the Wii U.

When people have emulated 3DS titles, the poly count stays the same, but the resolution is much better than what the 3DS pumps out.

I could see Nintendo doing that- but not with physical carts. E-Shop ports sure- but why risk making a game for two systems, then everyone just uses a 3DS?

They need to sell the NX, so they’ll be a catch.

Definietly something that’ll let you battle online like Battle Revolution did.
Question is, will they use 3DS’ shorter animation and models with a few more polys?
Or will they update the Battle Revolution models with longer animations?

    I like it.

This sounds like its basically a Vita and a PSTV in one, but with more power than the Vita. Basically a handheld you can also hook up to your TV. Handhelds by the notion of being handhelds have functionality that can’t be replicated on other platforms, making them more worthwhile to own. But unfortunately, not being able to just sit and relax with a controller playing handheld games on one’s TV can be kind of lame, and this seems to be addressing that. I’d totally play Pokemon on the big screen. I just hope we don’t just get Pokemon, but also Pokemon spinoffs like the Mystery Dungeon games. PMD games are better than mainline Pokemon any day of the week.

They never refused to allow a console Pokemon game, they specifically said that they don’t see the point anymore and that MAIN entries are handheld games.

They don’t really consider the spin-offs their games, so they don’t seem to care as long as it doesn’t take away from the main RPG games. They already gave HAL their ‘blessing’ for a new Pokemon Snap, so its up to Pokemon Co and Nintendo.

This console game might also turn out to be Pokepark 3 or something, or maybe Detective Pikachu.

NX isn’t necessarily a single device though, and it wouldn’t matter which device they use, either way its a win for Nintendo.

Having software shared across devices would be a huge selling point, especially when you consider Japan prefers portable devices and the west is more console and PC oriented. They can easily cater to both.

There are people who will only game on one or the other, and then there are those who will want both.

I would imagine that, assuming NX is a unified platform, it would be similar to Nvidia’s Shield devices. Two of them together would cost the same as a standalone console.

  38. OSad
    OSad
    September 25, 2016 at 7:42 pm

Yeah, unifying the two platforms might legitimately be a good idea, but Nintendo needs to really hammer home the point that you can have the same experience you had before on your 3DS using the NX’s portable mode, and I hope to god that Nintendo learned their marketing lessons from the Wii U.

The 3DS does make this slightly inconvenient though, the New 3DS specifically is not that old and it’s everywhere at this point. The point where you stop supporting the 3DS and shift everything to the NX might be a ways off yet.

    They’d also unify markets.

Their consoles will sell poorly, but their handhelds always sell well.
This method would ensure their premium home system games have a big market to sell on.

  42. scemar

It’s about time they accept the fact that they alienate a huge amount of their audience with their mediocre sub par scope towards game design.

I’ve had more fun with rutile ruby and star sapphire than any pokemon game in ages and it’s thanks to the redesigns implemented to make the gameplay fresh, engaging and interesting.

Every gym has required a well thought out plan, many encounters have made me sweat and it’s been a very rewarding and fun experience.

I’d really recommend those games for anyone over 8 looking for a real quality pokemon experience.

the design makes a ton of sense, we’re at a point where a handheld with a power similar to past gen consoles is plausible and viable

and nintendo has two options, make a system that can compete with the next gen 1.5 consoles at their best, or do a less powerful system

we all know they will not go for option A, so going for option B is the only way to go, thus taking that system and also making it a handheld flips the script and instead of an underpowered home system you get an interesting hybrid that expands the market and its library

additionally think about it this way, Nintendo was going to force a gimmick either way, at least this is a gimmick that won’t get in the way of gameplay very much, unlike the motion controls disaster or the pitiable tablet controller

That’s what the rumors have been for awhile. Three types of cartridges – one for console only, one for handheld only, and one that will work on both (all depending on what the developer intends for the game). I think two types makes more sense, one that works on both and one that is console only due to superior graphics.

Nintendo can afford to be Nintendo until 2052, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea.

Calling it out as fake. There might be some truth to its design since it’s based on what’s currently known about the NX, but even as a mock-up, it lacks the signature solid D-pad design found on all Nintendo systems since the NES/Famicom.
