Sony’s PlayStation VR2 headset is apparently struggling to sell well enough to clear out existing inventory – leading to Sony reportedly halting production until inventory is sold.
The new report (via Bloomberg) notes Sony has halted production on their virtual reality headset due to the accumulation of unsold stock of the device. Earlier reports noted the headset got sluggish sales, though Sony denied this at the time.
While Sony has been mum on actual sales data, sales bureaus claim Sony has produced 2 million PS VR2 headsets since its launch in February 2023, with sales falling subsequently every quarter since.
There are a number of factors that could be causing the latest Sony VR headset to flounder in sales: it’s somewhat steep $550 price (more than the PS5 itself costs), the lack of a large game library, no support for PS VR1 games on the device, and the (current) lack of non-PlayStation platform support.
Sony is remedying one of those things soon, though, as the company made a stunning decision to actually bring Windows PC support for the handheld. This decision only further cemented the believe the headset isn’t selling and Sony is trying to push more new buyers onto the platform.
The original PlayStation VR sold around 5 million units by 2020, a fraction of the install base the PlayStation 4 has achieved at the time of 100+ million consoles sold.
